Interesting about a beer flood!

 

 

The London Beer Flood was an accident at Meux & Co's Horse Shoe Brewery, London, on 17 October 1814. It took place when one of the 22-foot-tall  wooden vats of fermenting porter burst. The pressure destroyed another vessel, and between 154,000–388,000 US gallons of beer were released.

The resulting wave of porter destroyed the back wall of the brewery and swept into an area of slum-dwellings known as the St Giles rookery. Eight people were killed, five of them mourners at the wake being held by an Irish family for a two-year-old boy. The coroner's inquest returned a verdict that the eight had lost their lives "casually, accidentally and by misfortune". The brewery was nearly bankrupted by the event; it avoided collapse after a rebate from HM Excise on the lost beer. The brewing industry gradually stopped using large wooden vats after the accident. The brewery moved in 1921, and the Dominion Theatre is now where the brewery used to stand. Meux & Co went into liquidation in 1961.

Thanksgiving dinner recipe from Betty Crocker....

 

Here it is: The only green bean casserole you’ll ever need. Over 100 readers have given it near perfect ratings, and it’s easy to see why. This no-fail side dish may be a staple at holiday meals, but our three-ingredient green bean casserole recipe is so simple.

 

Easy Green Bean Casserole

 

 

 

2 cans (14.5oz) French Style green beans, drained

1 can (18oz) Progresso Vegetable Classics cream of mushroom soup

1 can (6oz) French-fried onion rings

 

 

Heat oven to 350º. In 1½ quart casserole or glass baking dish, combine green beans, soup, and half the onions. Mix well.

 

Bake 20-25 minutes, or until bubbly, topping with remaining onion rings during last 5 minutes of baking time.

• Stir in 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder, ground sage or thyme to the soup mixture to suit your family’s preference.
• Not a fan of canned green beans? You can easily swap those out for frozen beans. If you are using frozen green beans in this easy green bean casserole, you'll need 2 (14.4 oz) bags. Simply give them a quick rinse under cool water and shake of the excess water before adding to the casserole or thaw in the refrigerator overnight and drain before using.
• French fried onions on top of green bean casserole is one of the most traditional (and delicious) ways to serve it to a group, but you can opt for other crunchy toppings as well. Chopped toasted walnuts, sliced green onions, or chopped cooked bacon sprinkled on top after baking are all tasty alternatives!

National Gingerbread Cookie Day on November 21st encourages us to grab the rolling pin and cookie cutters. The baking will warm the home and decorating will inspire us to design tasty cookies while making memories!

National Gingerbread Day takes place on June 5. A favorite food of an Armenian monk, Gregory of Nicopolis, brought gingerbread to Europe around 992 AD and taught French Christians to bake it. Gingerbread was often used in religious ceremonies and was baked to be sturdy as it was usually molded into images of saints.

Gingerbread cookies make sturdy walls for houses (perfect for National Gingerbread House Day on December 12) and tasty gingerbread families that can be decorated by the children in your home.

HOW TO OBSERVE 

Invite friends to help you bake and decorate. Get the children involved and continue family traditions. Read the story of the gingerbread man.

Host a gingerbread design contest. While everyone is decorating, be sure to provide plenty of supplies. This is still important even if you’re hosting an online gingerbread design contest. You don’t want your home team to run out of icing or sprinkles just for zoom team B to zoom ahead with an abundance of supplies. One way to keep your gingerbread designs moving is by setting up stations. Start with icing, followed by sprinkles, edible glitter, and decorative piping. Then set up a drying station. Once everyone finishes, assign bragging rights to these categories:

• Most colorful
• Cookie most likely to be mistaken for a Salvador Dali
• Neatest icing and sprinkle usage
• Best use of icing
• Best repair job
• Most original design

Everyone should enjoy a good laugh and savor their hard work with a glass of milk and a tasty cookie!

Interesting about the world's longest beaver dam....

 

The longest known beaver dam in the world was not discovered by intrepid hikers, but rather by a researcher looking at “Google Earth”.

Beavers are one of the few species capable of creating structures that are significant enough to be seen from space. The toothy critters are remarkable environmental engineers. Their dams reroute streams and thus are capable of alterIng entire ecosystems. The creations, which are built to last, are barriers that form ponds, which in turn serve as defensive moats to protect the beavers from predators.

The dam, located in Wood Buffalo National Park in the Canadian province of Alberta, measures some 2,790 ft long, more than twice the length of the Hoover Dam. It was first spotted in 2007 by a Canadian researcher studying satellite photos. Its existence was verified in May of 2010 when rangers from Parks Canada took photos of it from a helicopter.

The dam is believed to be the work of several generations of beavers, who have probably been busy at the site since the mid-1970s. It stretches across a remote wetland area, which provides the creatures with plenty of fresh water and bountiful building materials.

The isolated location makes it difficult for any curious human to reach and disturb the site, which is located around 50 miles from the nearest human settlement.

• 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
• 4 cups beef broth
• 3 (15.5-ounce) cans black eyed peas, not drained
• 3 potatoes, peeled, diced
• 1 onion, chopped
• 1 celery stalk, chopped
• 1 carrot, chopped
• 3/4 teaspoon smoked paprika
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

 

 

1. In a soup pot over medium heat, saute ground beef 5 to 6 minutes or until browned, stirring frequently and breaking up the meat as it cooks.
    
2. Add remaining ingredients, stir to combine and bring to a boil.
    
3. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer 30 to 35 minutes, or until potatoes are fork-tender and all the flavors blend together.

Peanut butter lovers and fudge lovers come together on November 20th to celebrate National Peanut Butter Fudge Day.

On June 16th, people across the United States celebrated National Fudge Day.  Just by adding creamy or crunchy peanut butter the celebration continues. They will have the yummy taste of peanut butter as the fudge flavor and star of the show.

Fudge originated in the United States, possibly by a happy accident.  In 1886, a letter written by Emelyn Bettersby Hartridge was discovered. Ms. Hartridge attended Vassar College as a student in Poughkeepsie, New York, and the letter referred to a fudge her cousin had made.  Her cousin, in Baltimore Maryland, was selling the fudge for 40 cents per pound. Ms. Hartridge obtained the recipe, and in 1888, she made 30 pounds of fudge for the Vassar College Senior Auction. 

In the late 19th century, some shops on Mackinac Island, Michigan, began to produce products similar to that of the Vassar College fudge and sold it to summer vacationers.  Fudge is still made in some of the original shops there today.

Two other fudge holidays on the calendar are National Nutty Fudge Day on May 12 and National Penuche Fudge Day on July 22.

Yesterday the rain just poured down and the wind blew. It was insane! The it would stop and we'd get some sun. Then the rain would come back.... on and off.

Interesting how the Miami Dolphins got their name....

The Dolphins were the first expansion team of the AFL. Owner Joe Robbie and actor Danny Thomas purchased the franchise for $7.5 million. After Robbie was awarded the franchise, he wanted to place it in Philadelphia even though the NFL already had the Eagles. The AFL’s commissioner, Joe Foss, talked Robbie into going to South Florida’s tropical climate which was also without direct competition.

A “name-the-team” contest was held with a total of 19,843 entries. A committee comprised of local media selected Mustangs, Moons, Sharks, Dolphins, Suns, Mariners, Missiles and Marauders as the nickname finalists. "Dolphins" was selected and submitted by 622 entrants, with the winner Mrs. Robert Swanson.

In the first game, the Dolphins’ Joe Auer ran back the kickoff for a touchdown. The team would lose, however, 23-14 to the Raiders.

The turnaround for the club occurred with the hiring of head coach Don Shula in 1970. In 1972, the Dolphins garnished history as the team went a sterling 17-0-0. Although four other teams in the history of pro football have gone unbeaten during their season, this club is the only NFL team to go unbeaten and untied. Interesting enough, even though the team was 15-0-0. they played the AFC Championship Game on the road in Pittsburgh.

In 1983, five QBs were taken in the first round of the NFL draft. As the Dolphins were about to draft at No. 27—the second to last slot—the franchise selected what would become one of pro football's most prominent QBs: Dan Marino.

The franchise has captured two NFL championships, both Super Bowls.

Dazzle the gang with this irresistible BBQ Cheddar Meatloaf...a rolled meat loaf that oozes with cheese.

 

• 2 pounds lean ground beef
• 3 slices white bread, torn into small pieces
• 2 eggs
• 1/4 cup prepared yellow mustard
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
• 2 cups (8 ounces) shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
• 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
• 1 cup barbecue sauce

 

 

1. Preheat oven to 400º. Coat a 7- x 11-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
    
2. In a medium bowl, combine ground beef, bread, eggs, mustard, salt, and pepper. Mix with your hands until well blended. Place on a 12- x 16-inch piece of wax paper and pat firmly into a 10- x 12-inch rectangle.
    
3. In a small bowl, combine cheese and parsley; mix well. Sprinkle cheese mixture evenly over ground beef mixture. Roll up jelly-roll style, starting from the short end, by lifting with the wax paper and removing the paper as you roll. Seal the end well.
    
4. Place seam-side down in prepared baking dish. Pour barbecue sauce over the roll and bake 55 to 60 minutes, or until no pink remains in beef and juices run clear.
    
5. Remove from the oven and allow to stand for 10 minutes. Slice and serve.

Each year on the third Thursday in November, the American Cancer Society sponsors the Great American Smokeout.

This is an annual social engineering event to encourage Americans to stop tobacco smoking. The Great American Smokeout challenges smokers to quit cigarettes for 24 hours with the hopes that this decision will continue forever.

There are benefits to 1 day without cigarettes. After just 20 minutes without a cigarette, the heart rate drops. So does the blood pressure. Twelve hours later, the body will cleanse the carbon monoxide from the last cigarette from the body.

That’s a great start. If you make it past 1 day, your risk of heart attack begins to decrease along with heart disease and stroke. After just 1 day – keep it up.

After 2 days, things start tasting and smelling better. That’s because your nerves are healing from the smoke damage.

Day 3 may be tough. The nicotine is leaving your body and symptoms of withdrawal may occur. But you can do it.

By 1 month, you may notice you can breathe better. The coughing is less. Your lungs may be clearer.

Evolving from a series of small-scale initiatives, the first Great American Smokeout was held on November 16, 1977, in San Francisco’s Union Square.

• 1970 – Randolph, Massachusetts – Arthur P. Mullaney suggested people give up cigarettes for a day donating the money to a local high school.
• 1974 – Monticello, Minnesota – Lynn R. Smith of the Monticello Times promoted a “Don’t Smoke Day”.
• 1976 – November 18, The California Division of the American Cancer Society successfully prompted nearly one million smokers to quit for the day.
