Interesting about Frank Hayes....

Frank Hayes (1888 – June 4, 1923) was a jockey who, on June 4, 1923, won a steeplechase after suffering a fatal heart attack halfway through the race at Belmont Park in New York State, US.

The thirty-five-year-old Hayes had never won a race before and in fact by profession was not actually a jockey but a horse trainer and longtime stableman. The horse, a 20-1 outsider called Sweet Kiss, was owned by Miss A.M. Frayling. Hayes apparently died somewhere in the middle of the race, but his body remained in the saddle throughout. Sweet Kiss eventually crossed the finish line, winning by a head with Hayes technically still atop her back, making him the first, and thus far only, jockey known to have won a race after death.

Hayes' death was not discovered until Miss Frayling and race officials came to congratulate him shortly after the race. It was suggested that the fatal heart attack may have been brought on by Hayes' extreme efforts to meet the weight requirements, possibly followed by the excitement of riding to the front of the pack. The newspaper reported he had slimmed down from 142 pounds to 130 pounds in a very short time.

After the discovery of Hayes' death, all further post-race formalities were waived by the Jockey Club, the result being declared official without the customary weighing in. Hayes, dressed in his colorful racing silks, was buried three days later at Holy Cross Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York. The horse never raced again. It was claimed that Sweet Kiss was nicknamed "Sweet Kiss of Death" for the rest of her life.

Make sure you've got two empty hands, 'cause you're gonna want to grab two of these Baked Ham & Swiss Sliders! These mini-sized sandwiches bake all together in a casserole dish, and will remind you of your favorite ham and cheese sandwich, but only much, much better.

 

• 1 stick butter
• 1 large onion, minced
• 3 heaping tablespoons Dijon mustard
• 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
• 3 teaspoons poppy seeds
• 1 package of 12 Hawaiian Sweet rolls
• 1 1/2 pounds sliced ham
• 8 slices Swiss cheese

 

1. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt butter. Add onion and cook 5 minutes. Stir in mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and poppy seeds and cook about 10 minutes, or until onions are soft.
2. Preheat oven to 350 º.
3. Slice rolls in half all at once and place bottom half in a 9- x 13-inch casserole dish. Spread 3/4 of onion mixture over rolls; top with ham, cheese, and top half of buns, then top with remaining onion mixture. Cover with aluminum foil.
4. Bake 15 to 20 minutes or until heated through. Remove from oven, and slice down between the rolls to make individual sliders.

National V-J Day on August 14th commemorates the day in 1945 when news broke around the world the Imperial Government of Japan would surrender ending a long a grueling world war. In Europe, the date was August 15 due to the time zone, but regardless, the celebrations that broke out were no less zealous.

Since 1939, the entire world had been enduring the strife of war. The first rumblings began in 1937 but by the end of 1941, the United States would join the war they had vowed remain out of. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor by Japan on December 7th, 1941, the United States declared war and fully supported all fronts.

Throughout the war effort, military personnel and civilians stood together to make the next 4 years a united effort. Victory in Japan and the rest of the globe was a final goal.

NATIONAL VJ DAY HISTORY

In the United States, President Harry S. Truman announced the victory in a press conference at the White House later that day. The peace treaty was officially signed on September 2, 1945. A year later on August 2nd, Truman signed a proclamation declaring August 14, 1946, as Victory Day.

Interesting about the second largest form of Christianity ....

Protestantism is the second-largest form of Christianity with a total of 800 million to 1 billion adherents worldwide or about 37% of all Christians. It originated with the 16th century Reformation, a movement against what its followers perceived to be errors in the Catholic Church. Protestants reject the Roman Catholic doctrine of papal supremacy and sacraments, but disagree among themselves regarding the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist.

They emphasize the priesthood of all believers, justification by faith alone (sola fide) rather than also by good works, and the highest authority of the Bible alone (rather than also with sacred tradition) in faith and morals (sola scriptura). The "five solae" summarise basic theological differences in opposition to the Roman Catholic Church.

Protestantism began in Germany in 1517 when Martin Luther published his Ninety-five Theses as a reaction against abuses in the sale of indulgences by the Roman Catholic Church, which purported to offer the remission of the temporal punishment of sins to their purchasers. However, the term derives from the letter of protestation from German Lutheran princes in 1529 against an edict of the Diet of Speyer condemning the teachings of Martin Luther as heretical. Although there were earlier breaks and attempts to reform the Roman Catholic Church—notably by Peter Waldo, John Wycliffe, and Jan Hus—only Luther succeeded in sparking a wider, lasting, and modern movement.

We'd be lying if we called these "quick & easy." This potato pancake recipe takes more time than other recipes, but they're not hard, and they're worth the extra effort! Make 'em for Hanukkah or a special side dish or appetizer. They'll taste the love!

• 4 pounds Idaho Russet potatoes, peeled and chunked
• 1 large onion, quartered
• 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
• 1/4 cup plain bread crumbs
• 1 teaspoon baking powder
• 2 teaspoons salt
• 1 teaspoon black pepper
• 2 eggs, beaten
• 1/2 cup vegetable oil

 

1. In a food processor, process the potatoes and onions in batches, until finely chopped. Empty each batch into a strainer and, using a spoon, press down on the mixture to remove as much water as possible.
    
2. In a large bowl, combine potato-onion mixture, the flour, bread crumbs, baking powder, salt, pepper, and eggs; mix well.
    
3. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
    
4. Using a serving spoon, spoon about 1/4 cup batter for each pancake into the hot oil, flattening into a pancake shape. Cook 2 to 3 minutes per side, or until golden on both sides.
    
5. Drain on a paper towel-lined platter and serve warm.

****Make these small if you want to serve them as appetizers. Serve with the traditional fixin's of applesauce and sour cream.

International Left Handers Day on August 13th recognizes all those individuals who have mastered using their left hand in a right-handed world. We take our hats off to you – left-handed!

Approximately 10% of the population are southpaws. Scientists don’t know why a person develops left-handedness. But it’s more likely a child will be left-handed if one parent is a lefty, too. Parents of left-handed children used to force them to use their right hands. In the eyes of right-handers, the predominant use of the left hand seemed evil. Parents feared their communities would shun their children. While we accept left-handedness more readily than days gone by, its occurrence hasn’t increased.  

Famous Lefties

Many lefties seek to blend in because they will stand out soon enough. Their unique quality makes them feel awkward. They bump elbows or seem like a klutz. However, in a world designed for the right-handed, those who are other dominant adapt quite well. For example, eight United States presidents were left-handed, including Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama. Would the Sistine Chapel and the Mona Lisa stand the test of time if Michaelangelo and Leonardo de Vinci had been right-handed? 

Uncommon Individual

Left Handers Day recognizes the uncommon individual who throws, catches, writes, and uses a fork with their left-hand. They view the world just a little differently, too. At a restaurant, they seek out the seat that will place their dominant elbow on the outside of the booth. Right-handed athletes groan a bit when the southpaw shows up as an opponent on the roster. They present a challenge right-handers aren’t always sure how to handle due to lack of practice. And yet, lefties square off against righties all the time.
