Picture of the Day.... hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.......

Interesting about Old Glory........

Old Glory is a nickname for the flag of the United States. The original "Old Glory" was a flag owned by the 19th-century American sea captain William Driver (March 17, 1803 – March 3, 1886), who flew the flag during his career at sea and later brought it to Nashville, Tennessee, where he settled. Driver greatly prized the flag and ensured its safety from the Confederates, who attempted to seize the flag during the American Civil War. In 1922, Driver's daughter and niece claimed to own the original "Old Glory," which became part of the collection of the Smithsonian Institution, where they remain at the National Museum of American History.
Captain William Driver was born in Salem, Massachusetts. At age 13, Driver ran away from home to become a cabin boy on a ship.

At 21, Driver qualified as a master mariner and assumed command of his own ship, the Charles Doggett. In celebration of his appointment, Driver's mother and other women sewed the flag and gave it to him as a gift in 1824. With this flag flying over his ship, Driver went on to have a colorful career as a U.S. merchant seaman, sailing to China, India, Gibraltar, and the South Pacific. He participated in the tortoiseshell trade and knew some Fijian. In 1831, while voyaging in the South Pacific, Driver's ship "was the sole surviving vessel of six that departed Salem the same day." Driver picked up 65 descendants of the survivors of HMS Bounty and brought them back to Pitcairn Island. Driver was convinced that God saved his ship for that purpose.

Driver was deeply attached to the flag, writing: "It has ever been my staunch companion and protection. Savages and heathens, lowly and oppressed, hailed and welcomed it at the far end of the wide world. Then, why should it not be called Old Glory?"

National Hamburger Day on May 28th wraps up National Burger Month and also ushers in summer grilling season.
Hamburger. Seasoned ground beef, grilled and placed between two slices of bread or a bun. Topped with sauteed onions, peppers, pickles, sliced onions, or cheese. Add condiments such as ketchup, mustard, or mayo. Anyone of these combinations would create a modern American version a hamburger.
From Guinness World Records...

The largest hamburger weighs 2,566 lb 9 oz and was achieved by Wolfgang Leeb, Tom Reicheneder, Rudi Dietl, Josef Zellner, Hans Maurer and Christian Dischinger (all Germany) in Pilsting, Germany, on 9 July 2017.
The hamburger consisted of three meat patties, tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers, onions, hamburger sauce and a bun.

It is most likely that the hamburger sandwich first appeared in the 19th or early 20th centuries, but there is much controversy over its origin. Over the years, the hamburger has become a culinary icon in the United States.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Fire up the grill and get some patties started. Will you add cheese and make it a double? There are so many options when it comes to our burgers these days, how do we even decide anymore? Some creative burger choices you might try are:
  • bleu cheese
  • coleslaw
  • avocado
  • fried egg
  • barbecue and peanut butter
  • mac & cheese

From The Slow Roasted Italian...

The only 'rules' in Greek salad are tomatoes, olives, feta and olive oil.  I love mine loaded with crunchy veggies; peppers, red onion and cucumbers added to the tomatoes, Kalamata olives and loads of Feta cheese makes this a fabulous salad that I could eat every day!
  • 1 orange bell pepper, cut into bite-size pieces
  • 1 yellow bell pepper, cut into bite-size pieces
  • ½ red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 English cucumber, cut into spears and then quartered
  • 16 ounces cherry tomatoes, halved
  • ½ cup sliced Kalamata olives, divided
  • 4 ounces feta cheese, crumbled
  • ½ (19 ounce) package tortellini
Greek Salad Dressing
  • ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil
  • ¼ cup red wine vinegar
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  1. Bring a large pot of water Cook tortellini according to directions on the package (do not add salt to the water).  Drain and set aside once cooked.
  2. Chop vegetables and set aside.  Mince 1 tablespoon Kalamata olives for the dressing, set aside.  Combine remaining salad ingredients in a large bowl.  Set aside.
  3. In a pint size mason jar add salad dressing ingredients and minced olives.  Be sure to crush oregano with your fingers as you are adding it (to release the flavor). Shake mason jar until dressing is combined.  Pour dressing over salad and gently toss with salad tongs until well coated.
  4. Serve and enjoy.

DONNA’S NOTE

  1. If you are traveling with this salad or making it ahead, layer it in the order listed (the first ingredient goes in the bottom of the bowl, etc).  Travel with the dressing separately and add it once you are ready to serve it to keep salad perfectly crisp.

** First, friends Alice and Pat Reardon sent me a card in regards to "staying young and healthy".... It shows and older woman who says "A brisk walk is a great way to stay young and healthy". On the inside of the card it says, "The problem is the wine keeps splashing out of the glass!"... LOL!!!!

Put on your sneakers for National Senior Health & Fitness Day.  On the last Wednesday in May each year, approximately 100,000 senior adults will participate in activities across the United States for this national observance.
Many organizations offer special events especially for seniors:
  • Banks
  • Health Clubs
  • Area Agencies on Aging
  • Houses of Worship
  • Hospitals
  • Malls/Shopping Centers
  • Park & Recreation Departments
  • Retirement Committee’s
  • Senior Centers
  • State/Local/Aging Departments
Seniors benefit in numerous ways from physical activity. Exercises can be done at home, a community pool, or a local center. And seniors aren’t limited to just one type of exercise either. There are many to choose from. And many activities can be modified to fit any limitations. Yoga, walking, and swimming are all low impact routines that offer a range of benefits late in life and for all abilities. Some of the benefits include:
  • reduce fall risk and increase the ability to live independently
  • maintain strength, healthy joints, and muscles
  • helps reduce or control blood pressure
  • reduces the risk of colon cancer and diabetes
  • eases symptoms of anxiety
  • offers community and companionship when done in groups
  • reduces and prevents arthritis joint swelling and pain

HOW TO OBSERVE
