Throw Back Thursday ~ Cloudy/Rain ~ Picture of the Day ~ McDonalds Sedona Arizona ~ Tex-Mex Chicken Parm ~ My Picture on TV ~ National Spinach Day

Good 33ยบ cloudy morning.

Happy Throw Back Thursday ... 1989 when my Kristen graduated from the LA Sheriff's Academy.... Sheriff Block, Kristen, me, Jerry..

Yesterday we started off cloudy...

Then we got rain. It rained on and off all day.

I checked the downtown cam in Grants Pass... windy and rain all over the camera lens....

Picture of the Day ...

Interesting.....

The bright yellow letter M for McDonald’s is one of the most recognizable logos in the world. However, there’s one McDonald’s that forgoes that famous yellow color in its logo. In Sedona, Arizona, the arches are turquoise! Why you ask? The city of Sedona, is famous for its natural beauty—namely, its mountainous landscape of red rock. Because of the landscape, there are rules in place for buildings in Sedona to make sure that no structure intrudes on the surrounding natural scenery. City officials believed that gold would clash with the surrounding red rocks, and instead opted for a more pleasing, soft blue color.

Tex-Mex Chicken Parm

4 cups tortilla chips
Two 8-ounce boneless, skinless chicken breasts
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon chili powder
Kosher salt
3 large eggs
1/2 cup canola oil
One 15-ounce jar chunky salsa
One 8-ounce package pepper jack cheese, cut into 1/4-inch-thick slices
1 jalapeno, thinly sliced (seeds removed for less heat)
2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro leaves
  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
  2. Put the chips in a food processor and pulse until they are finely ground; set aside.
  3. Slice the chicken breasts in half horizontally so you have 4 thin chicken cutlets.
  4. Set up a breading station with 3 shallow dishes: Stir together the flour, chili powder and 1/2 teaspoon salt in the first dish. Beat the eggs in the second dish and add the tortilla chips to the third dish. Coat a cutlet in the flour. Dip in the egg, letting any excess drip off and then press into the tortilla chips. Transfer to a plate and bread the remaining cutlets.
  5. Heat 1/4 cup of the oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat until a piece of the breading sizzles when added to the oil. Add 2 breaded cutlets to the oil, making sure they don't touch each other. Fry until golden brown on both sides, 3 to 4 minutes per side. Remove to a paper towel-lined plate. Add the remaining 1/4 cup oil to the skillet, heat and then fry the remaining cutlets.
  6. Evenly spread 1/2 cup salsa on the bottom of a 9-by-13-inch baking dish. Arrange the chicken in a single layer on top. Pour 1/4 cup of salsa on top of each piece of chicken. Shingle the cheese evenly over the chicken.
  7. Bake until the cheese is bubbling and golden brown, 25 to 30 minutes.

National Spinach Day is observed annually on March 26th.  Not only are there so many delicious ways that you can enjoy spinach, but it is also incredibly good for you!
An annual plant,  spinach is native to central and southwestern Asia. Thought to have originated in ancient Persia, Arab traders carried spinach into India, and then it was introduced into ancient China where it was known as “Persian vegetable   The earliest available record of the spinach plant was found in Chinese, saying that the spinach plant was introduced into China via Nepal.
During her reign as queen of France, Catherine de Medici was well known to have enjoyed spinach so much that it was served at every meal.  To this day, dishes made with spinach are known as “Florentine” reflecting Catherine’s birth in Florence.
  • Spinach is:
  • Eaten raw or cooked and is available fresh, frozen or canned.
  • One of the best sources of iron.

Semi-savoy:  a hybrid variety with crinkly leaves:  is sold fresh and processed.
  • Following China, the United States is the world’s second-largest producer of spinach.
  • California, Arizona and New Jersey are the top spinach producing states in the United States.
HOW TO OBSERVE
You might want to have a fresh spinach salad or a spinach pizza or maybe a warm, delicious spinach dip.  If one of those is not your choice, perhaps it would be a dish of creamed spinach or spinach lasagna. There are many ways to add spinach to your daily diet and partake in its health benefits.

Gloom/Rain ~ Geese ~ Picture of the Day ~ Elizabeth Taylor ~ Mexican Taco Meatloaf ~ National Medal of Honor Day

Good 34ยบ dark cloudy morning.

The gloom yesterday......

Then my Schwans order was delivered by Leon. While we were outside the husband and wife geese were on my house roof, but they didn't stay long enough for me to get a picture... so took this through the wire fence as they landed out in back of the house....

And Mr. Single Goose was on my barn roof.....

Leon was being greeted by Dude and we started talking about our dog's heritage.... he said he's was named Bruno. I laughed, as I had dated Jack Bruno in high school!!

Yesterday we had some rain and I had a wet dog! Too bad we can't teach our dogs to hold umbrellas when they go out to do their business!

Picture of the Day .... LOL!

Interesting about Elizabeth Taylor....

On March 23, 2011, actress Elizabeth Taylor,
 February 27, 1932, London,
who appeared in more than 50 films, and won two Academy Awards, died of complications from congestive heart failure at age 79.  Here are 5 surprising facts you didn't know about Elizabeth Taylor...
Was there anything more stunning than Taylor's violet eyes and double eyelashes? While Taylor's eyes were not actually violet -- they were dark blue -- they could appear violet because of an excess of melanin pigment. As for those eyelashes, Taylor had a genetic mutation. This mutation, known as lymphedema-distichiassyndrome was caused by a gene called FOXC2. People with this hereditary condition have a double row of eyelashes, which is called distichiasis, and a risk of swollen limbs due to problems in the lymphatic system.

Apparently, 7 percent of people with this mutation also have congenital heart disease, and Taylor did have heart troubles that led to her death.
Taylor landed her first Life cover at the age of 15 and was on the cover 14 times throughout her life. She's been in over a thousand magazines as well, and the only person who's graced the cover of People solo more than she has is Princess Diana.

These days, it seems like every celebrity has their own signature fragrance. But the celebrity perfume and cologne craze all started with Taylor. In 1987, she released her perfume called “White Diamonds“ in collaboration with Elizabeth Arden, Inc. Every year, her perfume still brings in $1 billion in revenue globally.

When producer Walter Wanger was casting for the film Cleopatra, he knew he wanted Taylor to star as the lead role. He called her then-husband, Eddie Fisher, to discuss the movie. Taylor jokingly said to Fisher, “Tell him I’ll do the film for a million dollars.” This type of salary was unheard of in the industry, especially for a female leading lady. But Wanger obliged, and Taylor became the first actress to receive $1 million dollars for a single movie. Taylor later stated, “If someone’s dumb enough to offer me $1 million to make a picture, I’m certainly not dumb enough to turn it down.”

When Taylor married Conrad Hilton Jr. in 1950, her film career had taken off and he had a sizable fortune due to his father’s hotel chain. Though neither of them would have struggled for foot the bill for their 600-guest affair, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer actually paid for the whole thing.

If you want to read about Debbie Reynolds and the Eddie Fisher/Liz Taylor caper...

Here is a recipe shared by my pal Trisha Bowler (wife of the infamous John...LASD ret.) ... Sounds wonderfully good....

National Medal of Honor Day on March 25th recognizes all Medal of Honor recipients.
On March 25, 1863, Secretary of War, Edwin Stanton presented the first Medals of Honor (Army) to six members of  “Andrews Raiders” for their volunteering and participation during an American Civil War raid in April of 1862.
Created in 1861, the Medal of Honor is the United States of America’s highest military honor.  It is awarded only to US military personnel by the President of the United States in the name of Congress for personal acts of valor above and beyond the call of duty.
There are three versions of the Medal of Honor; one for the Army, one for the Navy and one for the Air Force, with personnel of the Marine Corps and the Coast Guard receiving the Navy version.
Since its creation, there have been 3,468 Medals of Honor awarded to the country’s soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, and coast guardsmen.
