Good 43º cloudy/foggy morning.

 

 

Yesterday the dark clouds and gloom was depressing. Rain was predicted...... and I had errands to do. So, of course when I left to get in the car it was raining! It kept up for a bit. Gentle rain. Later we got a bit more.

 

By the end of the day we topped at 51º.

The first eight athletes in each event of the Olympics receive a diploma, and their names are announced to the public. Only the first three athletes receive a medal as well. Since the 1932 Winter Games in Lake Placid (USA), the medal award ceremony has always been made on a podium. The first-placed athlete, on the highest step in the center, receives a gold medal and the title of Olympic champion. The second-place athlete stands to the winner’s right, and receives a silver medal; while the third-placed athlete stands to the left and receives a bronze medal. The flags of all three athletes are raised, and the winner’s national anthem is played.

The gold medal consists of just 1% of actual gold, 92.5% silver and 6.16% copper. The medal is valued at $600 based on the actual worth of the raw materials used.

If the athletes were to sell/auction their medals, they would probably get a lot more than just the face value of material.

Ozzie and Harriet's Chicken Salad Supreme

 

4 cups cubed cooked chicken

1 cup toasted almonds

1 1/2 cups chopped celery

4 T chopped ripe olives

4 T chopped mixed pickle

4 hard boiled eggs, sliced

1 cup green seedless grapes, halved

1 1/2 cups mayonnaise

 

Combine all the ingredients thoroughly. Serves 6.

Observed each year on March 23rd, National Puppy Day celebrates the unconditional love and affection puppies bring to our lives.  Their cuddles and wiggles make us smile and without a doubt, there are squeals of delight when there are puppies around!

National Puppy Day is also a day to bring awareness to the need for care of and homes for orphaned pups as well as to educate people about the horrors of puppy mills across the country. Puppies are a big responsibility. Be sure to consider everything involved and adopt from a shelter. The puppies there need love and a home just as much as any other and they grow into loyal pets, too!

Good 35º wispy pink clouds morning.

Yesterday was another sunny day. We topped at 67º.....

After a few minutes this morning with the pink clouds the sun came over and aimed at my mountain.....

And in another few minutes it was dark as the clouds were blocking the sun!

Rain has been predicted for today or tonight.

Yesterday Larry from the Woodville Rentals in town came and got my riding lawnmower to take it to his shop and fix the tires that keep losing air.

For almost 125 years, the secrecy surrounding the recipe for Coca-Cola has been a mystery. As the story goes, the drink's famous "Merchandise 7X" flavoring has remained unchanged since it was concocted in 1886. According to the company, only two employees are privy on how to mix the super-secret “Merchandise 7X” flavoring, and those employees are not permitted to travel on the same plane for fear the secret goes down with them. The identity of the two employees in possession of the secret is itself a secret. The formula is kept under 24-hour guard in a vault in Atlanta, Georgia.

Easy Mexican Fried Rice...

1 cup uncooked rice

2 T. corn or olive oil

1 1/2 cups water

1 package Lawry's Spanish Rice Seasoning Mix

Sauté the rice in the oil until golden. Add the water and seasoning mix. Mix and combine thoroughly. Bring to boil, reduce heat, cover and simmer on low for 25-30 minutes. 4-6 servings.

If you like cilantro, chop some fresh and stir it in prior to serving.

Today was a very special birthday, my neighbor Cindy Mize. Sadly she passed away this year. So missed by all who knew her. Hugs to you Frank!

At that time interracial marriage was forbidden by law in 31 U.S. states, and only in 1967 were those laws (by then down to 17 states) ruled unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court.

National Goof Off Day is observed annually on March 22.  Our research indicates that this day is also known as International Goof Off Day.  

It is a day to relax, enjoy and goof off.  Do something fun and leave the work until tomorrow.  Everybody needs to take a break from time to time.  It is often so easy to get so involved in the work and pressures in our lives. So stop, take a break, find something different! 

Let any goofy idea pop into your head.  Make paper airplanes from seed packets.  Doodle pictures of poodles in puddles in Peru.  Play a game of Jenga with randomly stacked spice jars.  Or do the obvious and spend the day in your pajamas doing nothing.

HOW TO OBSERVE

There are many different things that a person could do.  Strictly speaking, goofing off is the avoidance of work. So whatever you do on National Goof Off Day, try not to look like you are working. 

HISTORY

Monica (Moeller) Dufour of Davidson, MI founded National Goof Off Day.  According to official records, the first celebration took place in 1976.  In an interview with the Detroit Free Press in 1983, Moeller suggests the first event may have been a few years later.  Whenever the inaugural day took place, it’s no surprise National Goof Off Day was created by a kid with the direction to do things out of the ordinary.

When I looked out there was the full moon dipping down behind the mountain... danged tree was in the way!

 

 

Yesterday it started getting cloudy, but still enough sun for Dude to be happy.....

 

 

Then the rain that was predicted here never showed up! We had a lovely day. POURED in California, in the north and south.

Interesting about 'nachos'....

 

Nachos is a Mexican dish from northern Mexico that consists of heated tortilla chips or totopos covered with melted cheese (or a cheese-based sauce), often served as a snack or appetizer. More elaborate versions of the dish add other ingredients, and may be substantial enough to serve as a main dish. Ignacio "Nacho" Anaya is credited with creating the dish around 1943; the original nachos consisted of fried corn tortilla chips covered with melted cheese and sliced jalapeño peppers.

 

Nachos originated in the city of Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico, just over the border from Eagle Pass, Texas. In 1943, the wives of U.S. soldiers stationed at Fort Duncan in nearby Eagle Pass were in Piedras Negras on a shopping trip, and arrived at the restaurant after it had already closed for the day. The maître d'hôtel, Ignacio "Nacho" Anaya, created a new snack for them with what little he had available in the kitchen: tortillas and cheese. Anaya cut the tortillas into triangles, fried them, added shredded cheddar cheese, quickly heated them, added sliced pickled jalapeño peppers, and served them.

When asked what the dish was called, he answered, "Nacho's especiales". As word of the dish traveled, the apostrophe was lost, and Nacho's "specials" became "special nachos".

Anaya went on to work at the Moderno Restaurant in Piedras Negras, which still uses the original recipe. He also opened his own restaurant, "Nacho's Restaurant", in Piedras Negras. Anaya's original recipe was printed in the 1954 St. Anne's Cookbook.

The popularity of the dish swiftly spread throughout Texas and the Southwest. The first known appearance of the word "nachos" in English dates to 1950, from the book A Taste of Texas. According to El Cholo restaurant history, waitress Carmen Rocha is credited with making nachos in San Antonio, Texas, before introducing the dish to Los Angeles at El Cholo Mexican restaurant in 1959.

A modified version of the dish, with cheese sauce and prepared tortilla chips, was marketed in 1976 by Frank Liberto, owner of Ricos Products, during Texas Rangers baseball games at Arlington Stadium in Arlington, Texas. This version became known as "ballpark nachos". During the September 4, 1978 Monday Night Football game between the Baltimore Colts and Dallas Cowboys, sportscaster Howard Cosell enjoyed the name "nachos", and made a point of mentioning the dish in his broadcasts over the following weeks, further popularizing it and introducing it to a whole new audience

Ignacio Anaya died in 1975. In his honor, a bronze plaque was erected in Piedras Negras, and October 21 was declared the International Day of the Nacho. Anaya's son, Ignacio Anaya, Jr., served as a judge at the annual nacho competition until his death in 2010.

 

 

 

 

Lawry's Mexican Lasagna...

 

This is really good. I made it for the first time years ago!

 

1 1/2 pounds ground beef

1 med onion, chopped

1 clove garlic, minced

2 cans (1 pound each) tomatoes

1 pkg Lawry's Taco Seasoning Mix

1 can (4 1/2oz) chopped ripe olives

1 t. Lawry's seasoning salt

1/4 cup salad oil

8 corn tortillas

1/2 pound ricotta cheese

1 egg

1/2 pound sliced Monterey Jack cheese

1/2 cup grated cheddar cheese

 

Brown the ground beef, onion, and garlic in large skillet until beef is crumbly. Add the tomatoes, Taco Seasoning Mix, olives, and seasoned salt. Stir thoroughly. Bring to boil and reduce heat to simmer for 10 minutes. Heat the oil in a small skillet. Dip the tortillas in one at a time, in the hot oil to soften. Drain on paper towels. Combine the ricotta and egg. Spread 1/3 of the meat mixture in the bottom of a 9x13 baking dish. Cover the meat with half of the Monterey Jack cheese and half of the ricotta mixture. Top with a layer of tortillas that have been cut in half. Repeat the layers one more time ending with the meat sauce. Sprinkle with the cheddar cheese. Bake in 350º oven for 20 minutes. Let stand 5 minutes before cutting. Serves 6-8.

National French Bread Day is enjoyed by millions across the United States each year on March 21st.

French bread, also known as a baguette, is a long thin loaf made from basic lean dough. It is defined by its length and its crisp crust. Over time, French law has established what is and what is not a baguette.  Beginning in 1920 a labor law prevented bakers from starting their day before 4 a.m.  Bakers adjusted by shaping their loaves of bread, so they baked more quickly and evenly.  As a result, the long, narrow loaves were found to be convenient for slicing and storing. 

The French are known for their high standards where culinary arts are concerned.  To preserve quality in their bread, laws were passed requiring minimum quantities of certain quality ingredients in each loaf of bread.

Make some fresh-baked French bread and enjoy with friends over a meal.
