The clouds hung around and we barely hit 61º!

I had heard from family and friends that it POURED rain in Grants Pass as well as Medford. We didn't get a drop here! Darn.

 

10-30 is a radio code for 'transmission does not conform to regulations'. 

LOL, that is what Jerry called his bff/radio car partner, Steve Voors. His nickname was 10-30 Dude!!!

 

 

Breakfast was instant oatmeal topped with a microwaved egg (40 seconds in bowl with lid, prick yoke) and some plain non-fat yogurt with fresh melon, coffee and a Stroopwaffel.

Interesting re mobile phones...........

Prior to 1973, mobile telephony was limited to phones installed in cars and other vehicles. Motorola was the first company to produce a handheld mobile phone. On 3 April 1973, Martin Cooper, a Motorola researcher and executive, made the first mobile telephone call from handheld subscriber equipment, placing a call to Dr. Joel S. Engel of Bell Labs.The prototype handheld phone used by Dr. Cooper weighed 2 pounds 6.8oz and measured 9 inches long, and almost 2 inches wide. The prototype offered a talk time of just 30 minutes and took 10 hours to re-charge.

John F. Mitchell, Motorola's chief of portable communication products and Cooper's boss in 1973, played a key role in advancing the development of handheld mobile telephone equipment. Mitchell successfully pushed Motorola to develop wireless communication products that would be small enough to use anywhere and participated in the design of the cellular phone.

Isn't it fascinating how this invention has changed our world today?

Do you like chili? Do you like pasta? This sounds sooooooooo good!!!

Tortellini Chili

Prep Time:5 minutes Cook Time:25 minutesTotal Time:30 minutes Servings: 6

A quick and easy, 30 minute, one pot chili with cheese tortellini that is just perfect comfort food!

• 1 tablespoon oil
• 1 onion, diced
• 3 cloves garlic, chopped
• 1+ tablespoon chili powder
• 1 teaspoon paprika
• 1 teaspoon ground cumin
• 1 pound ground beef or turkey
• 6 cups beef broth or chicken broth
• 1 (15 ounce) can black beans, drained and rinsed
• 1 (28 ounce) can diced tomatoes
• 1 tablespoon tomato paste (optional)
• 1 teaspoon oregano
• 8 ounces fresh cheese tortellini (gluten free for gluten free)
• salt, pepper and cayenne to taste

1. Heat the oil in a pan over medium-high heat, add the onions and saute until tender, about 3-5 minutes.
2. Add the garlic, chili powder, paprika and cumin and cook until fragrant, about a minute.
3. Add the beef and brown, about 6-8 minutes, before draining any grease.
4. Add the broth, beans, diced tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano and tortellini and bring to a boil, reduce the heat and simmer until the tortellini is tender, about 10 minutes

 Slow Cooker: Implement steps 1-3, place everything but the tortellini in the slow cooker and cook on low for 6-10 hours or on high for 2-4 hours before adding the tortellini and cooking on high until tender, about 10-15 minutes.
Option: Start by cooking 4 strips of bacon, cut into 1 inch pieces, and use the bacon grease to saute the onions instead of the oil.
Option: Replace some of the broth with beer or coffee.
Option: This chili benefits from simmering for longer so if you have the time, hold off on placing adding the tortellini and simmer for up to 2-3 hours before adding the tortellini and cooking until tender, about 10 minutes.

Here is Dude from a year ago today. His leg ligament surgery was healing well and he could jump back up onto his couch.

 

He is great now. Runs and jumps and is just fine. The doc did a great job on my boy.

 

 

Later dinner was Schwans Shrimp Spring Rolls and some green beans and mushrooms.

 

Last night, after watching the Dodgers lose the World Series on the weekend, I watched my Patriots play the Buffalo Bills and WIN 25-6!

Candy Corn was created by George Renninger of Wunderle Candy Company in the late 1800s. He created this sweet treat to represent the bright colors of corn kernels.   Originally, Candy Corn was yellow, orange and white, but it has become popular in other colors as well.

This confection was originally made by hand using corn syrup, sugar, water, marshmallows, fondant and carnauba wax (a wax made from the leaves of a palm tree), but it is now produced using machines.  The original ingredients are still used in the recipe.

Yesterday, even with the dark clouds it was beautiful. All the fall colors are super!

 

About 1pm the winds came up and we got some rain.

 

Then again 2:30 we got a bit more.... You can see that it's raining on my mountain...

 

We got a total of 1/10 of an inch. Our temperatures stayed in the middle 60ºs. 

 

 

I have been getting so many crank calls. I never answer, let my answering machine (message:"Hello. We are avoiding someone we don't like, so leave your name and number and if we don't call back, IT'S YOU!") Calls come in at 8am every morning and again in the afternoon and early evening. Local numbers with no ID or an ID that says "Not in service", or now I'm getting calls from a local number that says "Sears". Good grief. When will they give up!!!!!!!!

John Adams (1735 - 1896) served from March 4, 1797 to March 4, 1801. His son, John Quincy Adams (1761 - 1848) served from March 3, 1825 to March 4, 1829.

 

William Henry Harrison (1773 - 1841) served from March 4, 1841 to April 4, 1841. He died of pneumonia 31 days into his term. His grandson, Benjamin Harrison (1833 - 1901) served from March 4, 1889 to March 4, 1893.

If you are a coffee house person you probably like the pumpkin lattes this time of year. Here's a recipe, you can make your own!

Pumpkin Spiced Latte

 

• 1 cup strong coffee (or 4 shots espresso)
• 2 cups milk (or milk substitute)
• 1 cup pumpkin puree
• 2 tablespoons sugar*
• 1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice

1/2 t. vanilla extract (optional)

 

 

1. Heat everything in a large sauce pan until the milk starts to froth up but before it boils.

Option: Use different sweeteners like caramel sauce, dulce de leche, maple syrup, brown sugar, honey, etc.
Option: Serve topped with whipped cream
Note: Make your own pumpkin pie spice with: 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon ginger, 1/8 teaspoon cloves, 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg.

Last night's 5th MLB World Series game was sad as the Red Sox clobbered the Dodgers again, 5-1. The Sox ended up winning 4 of the 5 games and are the MLB Champions. Sigh.................... 1988 was the last year the Dodgers won the World Series, against the Oakland A's. They played last year, the first since 1988 and lost to the Houston Astros. 

 

Just after the game the electricity went off. Fortunately it was only for a few minutes. Then apparently it went off again in the night, unknown for how long, as my coffee pot was off and the stove clock was flashing. Hmmmm.................

 

 

Saturday grandson Tucker and his Grants Pass High School Marching Band was in another competition up in Eugene at Autzen Stadium, home of the Oregon Ducks. His band won all competition!

 

Autzen Stadium is an outdoor football stadium in the northwest United States, in Eugene, Oregon.Located north of the University of Oregon campus, it is the home field of the Oregon Ducks of the Pac-12 Conference.Opened 51 years ago in 1967, the stadium has undergone several expansions. The official capacity is 54,000. However, attendance at the stadium regularly exceeds 54,000.

 

Also on Saturday my other grandson Jack, also a drummer, is with the Pasadena City College Honor Band and they played at a football game at PCC. Kristen and Alex attended the game.....

National Oatmeal Day is observed annually on October 29. This is a day to enjoy one of America’s favorite breakfast foods. 

There are many health benefits to eating oatmeal.

Oatmeal has a long tradition in the state of Vermont which originated within the Scottish settlement.  Although there were many variations, most oatmeal recipes began with steel cut oats.  The oats were soaked overnight in cold water, salt and maple syrup. Early the next morning, the cook would add ground nutmeg, ground cinnamon and, occasionally, ground ginger.  The pot was then placed over heat and cooked for approximately 90 minutes. The oatmeal was served steaming hot with cream, milk or butter.

Vermont leads the United States in per capita consumption of cooked oatmeal cereal.
