Heat Predictions ~ Throw Back Thursday ~ Klamathon Fire ~ Picture of the Day ~ Moonshine ~ Asparagus & Artichoke Breakfast Casserole ~ Dave & Nancy Perry ~ Brian/Dash ~Different Colored Eyes Day

Good 57º clear sunny morning.

The predictions for this next few days. YUCK!

The trouble is the Jackson County Fair started yesterday. Too hot for me to be walking around there!!!
Although I do have to admit I LOVE fair food! Jerry and I went every year to the Pomona Fair. Such fun.

Happy Throw Back Thursday...
1979... Jerry and I with Kristen, Brian, and Aaron

Yesterday was mild as far as winds. We topped at 100º. The fire that started in Hornbrook down in N. Cal and S. Oregon along I-5 is 60% contained now. Total fire area is 36,500 acres. It's called the Klamathon Fire.

Picture of the Day...
Not so lost, cat!

Interesting....

Moonshine has a long history dating back long before Prohibition. But it was Prohibition that really brought it to the forefront and, some would argue, even into the mainstream.
The term “moonshine” was actually brought to this country by British settlers who used it to describe various tasks that had to be done at night. It was adapted as a nickname for different types of illegal endeavors that were undertaken under the cover of darkness.

If you’re old enough to remember the Beverly Hillbillies (and would you admit it?), you already know that the designation “XXX” on a jug says there’s moonshine in it. But what does it mean? It means the shine has been run through the still three times so it’s almost pure alcohol.

The fact that moonshine is so potent comes down to the fact that it neither cut nor aged. When it comes out of the still the final time it is crystal clear and anywhere between 150 and 170 proof. That’s enough to make even the most manly beer drinker wet his pants and cry for his mama.

Asparagus and Artichoke Breakfast Casserole

A light, healthy and tasty summer breakfast casserole with asparagus, artichokes and plenty of cheese! Serves 6

  • 10 eggs
  • 1 cup cottage cheese (or ricotta)
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 pound asparagus, trimmed and cut into bit sized pieces
  • 1 (14 ounce) can artichoke hearts, coarsely chopped
  • 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, cubed

Mix everything and place in a greased 9x9 inch baking pan and bake in a preheated 375º oven until the eggs have set and the top is a light golden brown, about 20-25 minutes.

Reheat leftovers in microwave for a few seconds.

Today is a special anniversary.... Nancy and Dave Perry are celebrating #39! HAPPY ANNIVERSARY KIDS!!!

This was a couple years ago when they still had their beloved Skeeter.

National Different Colored Eyes Day is observed annually on July 12th.  There are many people out there that have two different colored eyes, and this is their day to celebrate!
Having two different colored eyes is a condition called Heterochromia.  There are three types of Heterochromia:
  • Complete heterochromia – one iris is a different color from the other.
  • Partial heterochromia or sectoral heterochromia – part of one iris is a different color from the rest of the iris.
  • Central heterochromia – an inner ring is a different color than the rest of the iris.
The concentration and distribution of melanin are what determines the eye color, specifically the color of the irises.  The affected eye may be hyperpigmented (hyperchromic) or hypopigmented (hypochromic).  The excess of melanin indicates hyperplasia of the iris tissues, whereas a lack of melanin indicate hypoplasia.
Most cases of heterochromia are hereditary, caused by a disease or syndrome or due to an injury.  It is possible that just one eye may change color following certain diseases or injuries.
A few celebrities are known to have two different colored eyes include Gracie Allen, David Bowie, Christopher Walken, Dan Aykroyd, Jane Seymour and Mila Kunis.

Interesting about the jawbone ...
Which bone in the human body is the hardest?
The mandible, or jawbone, is the hardest bone in the human body. It is also the strongest and largest of the bones in the face. The jawbone holds the lower teeth in place and connects to the skull behind the ears. The entirety of the jawbone forms while babies are in utero. First cartilage forms and then ossification takes place over several weeks to form the actual jawbone. During the first year of a child's life, the mandible hardens to become the strongest, hardest bone in the body.

SUMMER CORN SALAD

Summer Corn Salad is a bright refreshing taste of summer. Garden fresh corn and tomatoes come together with fresh mozzarella, herbs and a glorious dressing that really gives it an even lighter fresher taste. This simple recipe is the perfect summer side!

4 ears fresh corn on the cob, cleaned and washed
1 (10.5 ounce) package grape tomatoes, halved
8 ounces fresh mozzarella, cut into bite size pieces
10 basil leaves, chiffonade (roll leaves and slice thinly)
¼ cup fresh lemon juice
¼ cup extra virgin olive oil
2 garlic cloves, minced
½ teaspoon kosher salt
½ teaspoon fresh ground coarse black pepper
Cut corn off the cob, place into a medium mixing bowl.  Add tomatoes and mozzarella. Sprinkle with basil.  Set aside.
Add fresh lemon juice, olive oil, garlic, salt and pepper to a pint size canning jar.  Shake to combine.  Pour dressing over salad.  Toss to combine.
Serve and enjoy!
  1. If you are traveling with this salad or making ahead; you can prep the salad and the dressing and wait to pour dressing over salad until ready to serve.  Refrigerate until ready to serve.
  2. You can cook the corn if you prefer, I really enjoy the fresh taste of it uncooked in this salad.  The acid in the lemon juice will mellow out the starchiness of the corn and create a fabulous flavor.

Yesterday stayed really windy most of the day. First clouds I have seen in a week or so!

While I'm writing my blog at my desk, Dash just loves napping under the desk!!

Last night the three of them.... Dude, Bruiser, and Dash
Bruiser was trying to give Dash a bad time by laying next to his bed! Dude ignored them both.
Dash certainly likes my lap for napping in the evening!!

All I know. Nuff said. Happy Hump Day. Ciao.

Whether it is for breakfast or a snack, blueberry muffins are melt-in-your-mouth delicious and are honored each year on July 11th, National Blueberry Muffin Day.
While enjoying a delicious blueberry muffin, consider the powerhouse the blueberry is. This once wild berry became domesticated during the early 1900s thanks to the observations of Elizabeth Coleman White and the research of Dr. Frederick V. Coville. Before their efforts, wild blueberries were never successfully transplanted and raised in any farming operation for personal or commercial production. The only way to enjoy fresh blueberries was to seek them out where they grew naturally.
Today we can enjoy the abundant potassium, vitamin C and B6, and other health benefits of the blueberry much more readily than they did a 120 years ago. We bake them into muffins and eat them by the handfuls. They’re so likable, blueberries celebrate a popsicle, cheesecake and a popover day, too! Don’t forget, July is National Blueberry Month.
