Long Lens ~ Gas Can ~ Artichoke Bottoms ~ Escharian Stairwell ~ Gil Zavala ~ Dan Johnson ~ Kentucky Derby Day

Good 52º somewhat cloudy morning.

Yeah the sun came out yesterday!! Warmed to 70º by 12:30 and then the clouds came back, blocking the sun.
It warmed to 74º and was slightly muggy all day.

Thursday I was outside playing with my extra long zoom lens, 150-600 mm, and took a photo of the top of Fielder Mtn...
A close up of the Red Hot Pokers...
A turkey vulture up at the tippty top of my pasture, chowing down on something... (don't want to know!)
My Dude's sweet face...
And then the UPS truck arrived....

I had ordered this new gas can. Mike told me about them, he has some too, and I wanted one that the spout didn't stay inside the can and when taken out it got gasoline all over your hands.
This works great... spout is on the outside, when you tilt it to fill whatever you push a button and then the gas comes out!

When I was looking for the gas can on Amazon I saw these...
I ordered a case! I had never seen artichoke bottoms before. I LOVE artichokes so this will be fun. They can be grilled on the barbecue or stuffed with chicken, tuna, shrimp, or maybe crab salad. YUMMM.... Can't wait to try!

So Friday, breakfast was a poached egg atop an Orowheat Cinnamon Raisin muffin. And, I couldn't wait to try the artichoke bottoms, so just put a little mayo on each.
OMGOOOOOD!!!!!!

Lunch was cantaloupe, honeydew, watermelon, pineapple, and strawberries....

Ok, this shared by pal Gator. It's impossible to fathom... the Eschrian Stairwell. I want to see the plans! This blew my mind!!!

Two special birthdays today.... high school pal Gil Zavala... HAPPY BIRTHDAY GIL!!!
With his bride of 50 years, Mary (Fancher. Also a high school pal) !

And Brian's pal Dan Johnson is celebrating today. HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAN!!!

Dinner was reruns....

Later it was chair, wine, TV. Then Dude and Bruiser went outside after Dude had his dinner. Bruiser never came back. It wasn't until 10pm he finally showed up! I was a wreck with worry. Darn cat!!!!

International No Diet Day

International No Diet Day encourages us to appreciate the bodies we have. You could consider it a "Big" backlash against becoming little (err thin) people. This day is intended for us to appreciate the body we have. It encourages us to recognize that people come in all shapes and sizes....... and that's okay.

Anti-diet groups exist to assist and support people who suffer illnesses like anorexia, in their efforts to shed fat and be thin.  In addition to anorexia, other medical problems can result from taking diet pills, and surgeries, such as stomach stapling, to control weight.

International No Diet Day is a good opportunity to re-assess and evaluate your weight management goals and perspective, and to make certain your efforts to be thin don't come at a risk to your health. If you decide that continuing your diet is right for you, then use today to take a one day break.

Remember the old saying: "You're body is your temple." In your efforts to make your temple a thin one, do so in a safe and healthy manner.

Today is also....
Military Spouses Day

Military Spouses Day was created by President Ronald Reagan in 1984 Secretary of Defense Casper Weinberger established the Friday before Mother’s Day as Military Spouses Day

Military Spouses Day is a day to recognize and honor the real backbone of the military..... the spouses of our soldiers. This day recognizes the contributions made by military spouses to the spirit and well being of soldiers and military communities. Where would military moral be without their spouses behind them?

And lastly today is ...
National Nurses Day
  • May 6-12: National Nurse's Week
  • May 8: National Student Nurses Day
  • May 6th: National Nurses Day
  • Wednesday of Nurse's Week: School Nurses Day
  • May 12: International Nurse's Day
  • November 14: Operating Room Nurse Day

The roots of International Nurses Day goes back to 1953, when Dorothy Sutherland of the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare sent a proposal to President Eisenhower to proclaim a "Nurse Day" in October of the following year. The proclamation was not officially made. But, this day was born and eventually gained national recognition.
International Nurse Day is celebrated on May 12, because this it's the birthday of Florence Nightingale.

Throw Back Thursday ~ Cinco de Mayo ~ Chest Hair Gag ~ Bernie Kammer ~ Uncle Bud Hansen ~ Dawn Forbus ~ Thunder Storm

Good 54º cloudy foggy gloomy morning.

Happy Throw Back Thursday
1986.... Paul Harper and me...... (already put this on my FB page a few days ago.)

Paul was an actor and a Sheriff's Reserve. Was in the movie The Wild Bunch. Here he is with the cast... he is bottom row, center.

For the film he had all of his teeth pulled. The studio paid him $20,000 to do this! He was also in a Pace commercial where he said, "New York City? Get a rope!"

HEY you know what day this is???? It's :

Cinco de Mayo... the REAL story...

(Spanish for "fifth of May") is a celebration held on May 5. It is celebrated nationwide in the United States and regionally in Mexico, primarily in the state of Puebla, where the holiday is called El Dia de la Batalla de Puebla (English: The Day of the Battle of Puebla). The date is observed in the United States as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride, and to commemorate the cause of freedom and democracy during the first years of the American Civil War.In the state of Puebla, the date is observed to commemorate the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín. Contrary to widespread popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's Independence Day—the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico—which is actually celebrated on September 16, or as we used to say, the day the new Chevy's came out!

So make some Margaritas, have some rice and beans, guacamole, pick up some tamales... traditional Mexican dishes. Celebrate with our Mexican friends a special day.

Yesterday the rain started about 7:30am. Then it stopped and started again in an hour. That was it.  Nothing to measure.

I went into Grants Pass to do some shopping at Safeway. Got a ton of stuff. The worst part is unloading the car, carrying it in, and putting it away.  One of the checkers, Lisa, is a former prison guard from NY. She is so nice. I told her I was thinking about shopping today and thought of her. Looked at the clock and it was 10:15!!! That made me laugh because 10-15 is our department code for "prisoner in custody" !!!

On the way home I stopped at Taqueria de Guacamaya,
our new local Mexican restaurant. I got some mini tacos and tamales to go so today I can celebrate Cinco de Mayo!

Today there are 3 birthdays.... Bernie Kammer (LASD ret). Happy Birthday Bernie! (With his wife Sharon)

Also, Bud Hansen (LASD ret.), aka Uncle Bud! Happy Birthday Bud!!! Jerry and Bud at the department's chili cook off about 1984....
Bud was our Captain at Temple and I believe he retired as a Chief or Inspector.

And today is also the birthday of Dawn Forbus...
(wife of one of "our son's" Jimmy ... former LASD and retired from Washoe Co Sheriff's Dept)
HAPPY BIRTHDAY SWEETHEART!!
