Good 38º foggy morning.

The snow on the summit is melting...

 

Yesterday I stopped at Brian's office ...

...then off to Safeway. Surprise of all surprises I saw an old friend in there I hadn't seen since 1998! Don Bear! He's ret. LASD and worked at Temple with Jerry. He also had magician skills and would put on magic shows for our Cub Scout troop (Jerry was Cub Master and I was Den Mother!). How fun to chat. He told me he thought he saw the Patterson's going in the store. I found them, Bill and Jeannie doing a quick shopping tour. Chaka was in their car so I gave her a treat. Brian had said my car NEEDED washing. Fine. So I drove through the car wash...

See Bri... all clean!

Then to PetCo for jerky treats for Dude. Got a call from Jeannie saying to meet them for a glass of wine. We met at the new spot in town, The Haul ...

They have a seating bar that goes across the front and you can watch all the activity outside. Fun. We saw two odd looking characters walk by and then along came a GP policeman and a plain clothed detective behind them. They saw us in the window and I waved to the poleeece! He smiled and pointed at the "characters" they were following! LOL.   

I took this picture of the inside... industrial not fancy, and got stares from the woman in yellow! Ha ha ha....

Going back soon to try their food. Looked and smelled good! In the summer the restaurant folks said they raise the two sliding glass doors so it's like sitting outside and they have a barbecue pit out there. Neat!

 

We ran into friends of B&J's, Nick (their vet) and his son James (studying to be a vet). Such nice people. They were heading to the Eagles to play pool so we went there too.

My little pocket camera doesn't do the best in low light and with moving objects....

Ran into two others ... John (who owns B&J's dog Chaka's brother.. he also worked at one time at the Elks) 

and Brent who worked at the Elks. Hadn't seen Brent in a long time and didn't recognize him with the beard!

We had a very enjoyable afternoon gabbing with friends!

Then home to Dude and the Bruise and dinner. I had put a turkey breast in the crockpot. Mixed onion soup mix and cranberry sauce and topped it with that. Cooked 8 hours on low. Use either jellied or whole cranberries.

Yeah, now for turkey sandwiches!!!

 

 

Today is a special birthday... good friend Trish Bowler is celebrating (wife of John, LASD ret). HAPPY BIRTHDAY GIRLFRIEND!!! Trish with her new grandson, Christian.

National Fruit Cake Day

Today is National Fruitcake Day. The most maligned food in America is not cilantro. It is fruitcake. But yes, Virginia, there is great fruitcake—the kind that, 100 and 200 years ago, people had reason to celebrate—and not just at Christmas. It was the wedding cake of choice. Personally I LOVE fruitcake. I like to make or buy the dense cake, drizzle on rum or whiskey every day for a week. OMGOOOOOD! I know most of you don't like fruitcake... your loss. I think PJ's Dave and I are the only ones left on the planet who like it!

Good 36º foggy morning.

 

Snow on the Siskiyou Summit this morning....

And in Hawaii... there are snow capped mountain tops! Whodda thunk!

 

Yesterday I was up early (ugh), fed Dude and the Bruise, took them out for their "duty", made a Cinnamon Swirl French Toast Casserole, packed the car, showered, dressed, and out the door on the way to Brian and Jen's by 8am!

 

The casserole was GOOD! Here's the recipe...

Pam Cooking Spray

12 slices cinnamon raisin bread (I used Franz Cinnamon Swirl)

1 package Jimmy Dean Maple Sausage

2½ cups Egg Beaters

2 cups low fat or fat free milk

1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar

2 t. vanilla

Maple Syrup

Preheat oven to 350º, spray 9x13 pan with Pam. Slice thin and fry sausage. Overlap bread in dish. Top with sausage pieces and put in between slices also. Whisk together egg, milk, sugar, and vanilla. Pour mixture over bread and let stand 10 minutes. Bake 45 minutes, or until set and golden. Serve with syrup if desired.

 

This was the original recipe, doubled! You can cut it in half and use a 9x9 pan. I got a new Crockpot Casserole

so I took the casserole dish out of the crockpot and baked the recipe in the oven, then put it back in the Crockpot and put on "warm". Will definitely make this again! OMGOOOD!

and Tucker loved the Peyton Manning Broncos jersey I got him..

Soooooooooooooo............ if the Broncos play my Patriots in the Super Bowl... we will be wearing our jerseys!!!

Candy Cane Day

Candy Cane History

Candy canes were created in 1670 in Germany, by the choirmaster of the Cologne Cathedral. He created sugar sticks for the young singers in the choir, to keep them quiet during the long Living Crèche ceremony. He bent the sugar-sticks to represent a shepherd’s staff.

At this point, candy canes were all-white and had no flavoring. They remained this way for more than 330 years. White candy canes can still be seen on Christmas cards dating to 1900.

Shortly after then, the first red-and-white striped candy canes appeared. The name of the innovator is lost to history. At about the same time, confectioners added peppermint and wintergreen flavors to create the “modern” candy cane.

Throw Back Thursday....

Me, 1950, with my favorite doll, a gift from Santa....

And... I still have her... she's sitting in a chair that belonged to Jerry that hung in the garage forever and I finally painted it..

This was a Dionne Quintuplet doll. She is all made from plaster with rubber strings inside to let the legs and arms and head move. The eyes open and close. I read somewhere that they are worth about $300 each now. 

 

Yesterday I went to the post office to pick up a package. It was the DVDs of the Ed Sullivan Shows. Will be fun to watch. Then stopped at the market. A zoo~!! Parking lot was insane! Got home and made deviled eggs (Brian's fav) and organized the dips, veggies, chips, and wine I was taking to Jean's. Jen's mom made Christmas Eve dinner... Food was awesome, so great to see Marie (Jen's cousin) and Jimmy (Jen's brother). Pictures later.....

National Pumpkin Pie Day

Today is a very special day. It's National Pumpkin Pie Day. It's one of America's favorite pies. Pumpkin pie is steeped in holiday tradition. The peak consumption period for pumpkin pie begins at the fall harvest, and lasts all the way through to the Christmas meal and dessert.

One might wonder why have National Pumpkin Pie Day on Christmas Day. Unfortunately, we have yet to find the creator of this day. So, the timing remains a mystery. However, we are thankful for this special recognition, and will certainly have a little pumpkin pie with our whipped cream today
