Fires ~ Sunrise Sunset Schedule ~ Tom & Del ~ Tacos ~ Coast Guard

Good 59º smokey morning. I kept the house open most of the day yesterday as there was a breeze. Saw on the news a man trying to protect his property near Klamath Falls and the winds were 75mph!!! The heat from the fire he said was 125º. More evacuations expected. 10% containment only on some fires. More in Siskiyou County (northernmost county in Ca!)

Here is the latest fire update...

Here is the sun coming up through the smoke yesterday...

When the time changes and the sun is out early, 5-ish you kinda get used to it. Then as the summer progresses and at 7 the sun still isn't up it starts to feel odd. Here it has to come up over the mountain behind me and sets behind the mountain in front of me. Still, here we're on a little different time schedule as we are 200 miles west of Los Angeles.

So right now our sunset will be 8:30 pm and Los Angeles will be 7:52 pm. When it's dark in LA I can still read outside without a light! In December the sun will set here at 4:40 pm! Go to this site, put in your zip code and then scroll down .. you can change to any day or month for both sunrise and sunset..

Today is a special anniversary of my high school friend Adele (Easton) and her hubby Tom Graves. 49 years!!! HAPPY ANNIVERSARY kids!

... and here's one of their children.. Barkely~!

U.S. Coast Guard Day

U.S. Coast Guard Day honors the military branch that protects our waters and shorelines. The U.S. Defense Department suggests that this day is largely an internal celebration for all Coast Guard personnel and their families, past and present. But, we'd like to encourage everyone to honor the brave members of this important branch of the military.
Celebrate U.S. Coast Guard Day by learning more about the responsibilities and functions of the U.S. Coast Guard. They are now playing an even  more extensive role in Homeland Security to protect our country.
We salute Coast Guard personnel today and every day. We hope you do, too.

Of course Julie Andrews can sing like nobody's business and Dick Van Dyke was just AWESOME with his dancing and singing and that Cockney accent!!! Lots of fun.

If anyone wants to borrow the DVD you are welcome to!

National Watermelon Day

This big fruit deserves it's own big day. So, we give pause to celebrate watermelons on National Watermelon Day. Sweet and tasty, watermelons, are one of summer's favorite fruit. It's standard fare at picnics. While watermelon is over 90% water, it sure tastes good. And, what picnic would be complete without a seed spitting contest?
Research was unable to establish this day as a true national day (which requires an act of congress). Also not uncovered is the origin of this day. I suspect it originated by an agricultural organization, or perhaps a wild and crazy watermelon fan.
Please don't limit your consumption of watermelon to just this month. Stores carry watermelon twelve months of the year.

Get the seedless watermelon, cut it up, put in blender or food processor and process until all liquid. Strain out solids and add vodka! Vodka martini! YUMMMMMM.....

Oddly Marked Animals ~ Bicycle Seat ~ Spencer ~ Marie ~ Bruiser ~ BLT Crab Salad ~ Saving Mr. Banks ~ Coyote & Turkeys

Good 60º clear but smokey morning. Smoke coming from the south, from the fire near Ashland and the one by Yreka in California.

Ok, after posting the link for 33 perfectly timed photos, Vivia wrote me and said to take a look at these animals with odd markings. What a riot. Thanks Vivia! (Hey, Ann and Gabe, does your new little "Yoda" have a heart on her butt?)

PICTURE OF THE DAY:

SPECIAL birthdays today...My friend Erika's hubby Spencer is celebrating. HAPPY BIRTHDAY SPENCER!

Also today I am celebrating Bruiser's 6th birthday. Just a guess as to his age and the date of his birth, from seeing him in my pasture way back in 2008. HAPPY 6th BIRTHDAY BRUISE!!! ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ Gonna spoil you today (like that never happens) and you get tuna for breakfast!

Yesterday was a "get nothing done" day. Just hung out and stayed cool. Dinner was that BLT Crab salad from Elmer's...

Fresh avocado, tomatoes, bacon, lettuce (natch), carrots, crab, black olives, spinach, and ranch dressing! YUMMMMMM!!!!!

Then since nothing good is on TV during the summer I watched the movie Saving Mr. Banks.
Wow. As always Tom Hanks is good (even though his politics suck!) He played Walt Disney. Emma Thompson was the author of Mary Poppins and the movie basically was a trip back into her life and how/where she was raised and the result was the book Mary Poppins. It certainly has some moments where you want to strangle Emma's character, P L Travers! Next movie on the line up is Mary Poppins! Been 50 years since I've seen it!

Yesterday early evening a flock of Jakes and Toms were in my driveway. Well, they had been there all day laying in the shade, but there was this coyote in the pasture down by the gate...
... and this guy was making the turkeys nervous... I called to him and he looked my way. Soon he was gone. I called Frank and Cindy (house just outside my gate) to warn them a coyote was coming that way. They sometimes leave the door open so Lucy (Jack Russell pup) can go in and out and they also have a cat that wanders outside. They weren't home, so I left a message.

All I know. Paperwork day and clean off desk day. Joy. Tacos for dinner.

Happy Saturday. Nuff said. Ciao.
