Helping Returning Veterans ~ One More Limerick ~ Brush-Hogging Rick ~ Scoot Trailer ~ Dude and a Snake ~ Buttermilk Biscuits

Good 49º sunny clear gonna be hot day morning! Boy, the moon was sooooo HUGE and bright last night! Flory Ornstein wrote that it was 101 degrees over at the coast in Lakeside yesterday. Wow.

I called the Oregon Dept of Revenue to see if my "bill" had been straightened out. YES, it has been. I owe them nothing. Their error not mine. Have to say that both the people I spoke to there were really nice. Thanks ODR!!!

Here is an awesome site that helps returning veterans and animals. Thanks Judy Duvall for this info.  If you have things to donate, they will pick them up... needed are furnishings for their home... furniture, silverware, dishes, just about anything. Also if the family wants a dog or a cat they will be provided with one. They have a 714 phone, so they are in Orange County. If you can help these returning heroes in any way please contact them.

The limerick thing started something. Got this from my friend Greg Lundell (Wilsonite) and wrote him back...

"The essence of limerick popularity is sexual innuendo or explicitness."
Really....? Well, aren't you the little limerick aficionado.

Let's see....

He wants to do IT...
But she thinks he has no wit.
A joke or a smile
Will make it worthwhile.
He's going to have to apply for a permit!

Rick got here yesterday about 9am and started brush-hogging the pastures.

It's a long day sitting on that tractor for hours and hours.

I did some mowing... about an hour's worth and then took a break. Started warming up. By 1pm it was 82º but hotter in the sun sitting on that riding mower. I felt better after cooling off, eating, and then back out there for another hour... by then it was 86º.  Rick will be back today to do the upper pasture.

I also went to the barn and pulled out the motorcycle trailer to see if the riding lawnmower would fit on it. (Looks similar to this one)

Rick though it would. I'd like Dave to take the lawnmower to his work and get it running right and the blades sharpened. That bike trailer is heavy and I had it up on the roll around wheels and then it hit the slight slope on the barn apron and BAM! It hit the ground. Doesn't look like any damage. Old ladies should not handle big heavy things with wheels! Well, except for driving cars!

After all that I sat on the porch with a glass of wine. I glanced over the rail and Dude was laying in the sun, but the weird thing was a snake laying in the shade and on the wet grass I had just watered! He wasn't moving. Had me worried Bruiser had attacked him. I went down there and ran my finger along his body... felt movement and didn't see any bite marks or blood. He still laid there so finally he started moving. He had no rattlers and his head wasn't diamond shaped... Brian said a gopher snake. I partially picked him up. He was cold and I think he liked the warmth of my hand. Anyway, after that he slithered away to hide in the bushes.

Rick was still out there working away.... He finished about 4pm. Today should only take him about 3-4 hours.

All I know. Happy Hump Day. Nuff said. (Kinda surprised nobody mentioned my hand-feeding of the wild sea otter in the blog yesterday, except Flory!)  Ciao.

Sea Otter ~ Taco Seasoning & Dry Onion Soup ~ Geese ~ Garlic Noodle Soup ~ Frog Jumping

Good 44º clear morning. Hit 82º yesterday. Will be hotter today. Stayed with a slight cloud cover yesterday. I had the heat on until noon. My house really stays cool. Then opened up the doors. Nice.

A long time ago, 1975, Jerry and the children and I went camping up the coast of Ca. We found a trailer park in, and I'm thinking it was Goleta. We were out on the beach and in a little bay off to the side a sea otter was sitting in the water watching us. I had some bread and sat down and held it out to him. He came over and gently took the bread. I think I fed him a couple more pieces...as Jerry took this picture. "Nobody can hand feed a wild sea otter" said the Forestry guy. Ha! I have proof. Even the local Deputy we talked to didn't believe it. But, couldn't show them proof as the old camera had film that had to be developed......

Want to make something good.... and easy??

These are things you make yourself and know what's in them!
Make your own Onion Soup Mix:
2/3 cup dried minced onion
3 t. parsley flakes
2 t. onion powder
2 t. turmeric
1 t. celery salt
1 t. sea salt
1 t. sugar
1/2 t. ground pepper
Mix all ingredients in a jar, then give the jar a good shake. I also recommend shaking the jar to mix the ingredients well before each use. Use 4 T. in a recipe in place of 1 packet of onion soup mix. Store in cool dry place.

Make your own Taco Seasoning:
1/2 cup chili powder
1/4 cup onion powder
1/8 cup ground cumin
1 T. garlic powder
1 T. paprika
1 T. sea salt
Put ingredients in jar and shake. Sprinkle on ground beef while cooking (or ground chicken, turkey, or pork)

The geese are funny. They like to sit out on one of the well pump houses in  the pasture....

Dinner last night was easy peasey..... I heated the Trader Joe's Thai Garlic Soup, put it over a dish of cut up tomatoes and baby spinach. Very tasty! Very low in calories too!

My brush-hog guy, Rick Hart, is coming over today to brush-hog the pastures. I will finish up my paperwork on my desk and get it filed. Then to the barn to get out the motorcycle trailer and see if Dave will come over and hook it up and take my riding lawnmower down to the shop and see why it's running so poorly and also sharpen the blades.

Bout all I know. Nuff said. Happy Tuesday. Ciao.

Frog Jumping Day is a great day to jump like a frog. Or, is today intended to jump "over" a frog? Either way, today is a fun day. But, is this truely the reason for this day?  Read on.........
The roots of Frog Jumping Day go back to Mark Twain's first short story. It was first published in 1865 as "Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog". Later, he published it as "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County". It is also known under a third title "The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County".
While we have discovered many links and references to Frog Jumping Day evolving from this Mark Twain short story, we have yet to discover the reason for this particular date. May 13th is neither the date of Mark Twain's birth , nor his death.
How is the best way to celebrate Frog Jumping Day?
  • Read Mark Twains story "Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog"
  • Also, we don't think Mark Twain would mind if you jumped like a frog or jumped a frog today.
