Good 26º VERY foggy (again!) and everything frozen morning. UGH. The sun did eventually come out yesterday...about 2pm. Warmed to a tropical 38º. Warm enough for me to bundle up and take my trash out to the can by the road.

Today is day 3 of this coughing/sneezing/runny nose mess I have. Took a "cold-allergy" pill last night and slept all night without waking up once to cough!

Here is the soup I made day before yesterday...

2 cartons of chicken stock

1 lg can of Kirkland chicken

1/2 cup Farro (or couscous, or Quinoa, or any pasta)

1/2 cup Mexican flavored rice (Uncle Bens)

1 can, drained, garbanzo beans

6-8 Brussels sprouts, trimmed and cut in half

handful of broccoli slaw (with shredded carrots)

6-8 broccoli pieces

4 Roma tomatoes, cut up

zest of one lemon

juice of one lemon

Put everything except tomatoes into crockpot. Turn on high for 1 hour, then low for 3-4 hours. Add tomatoes the last hour.

It was awesome!

BTW, I was experimenting again with Photoshop and figured out how to put together all the ingredients of the soup onto one picture. Yea!

Good 28º foggy morning. Still too cold for me. It's that screaming I hear when someone's bottom hits the toilet seat or when the deodorant is applied to the underarm! Oh wait, that's me! It was still just 37º by 1:30 yesterday afternoon. Come on sunshine!!!

Yesterday I spent nursing this "thing" I caught. Throat scratchy, coughing, sneezing and sneezing, and nose is a runaway.

Zicam, chewable Vitamin C, gargling with apple cider vinegar (1 T to 1/2 cup very warm water), and Bill's hot apple pie (apple cider, cinnamon, cloves, and Everclear!) ... and I made more chicken soup yesterday. (Really good, recipe later) I haven't gotten any worse, but I haven't gotten any better. Staying home and away from everyone.

Hot Buttered Rum Day

Serves 4



 

4 ounces (1 stick) room-temperature unsalted butter

1/2 cup packed dark-brown sugar

1 teaspoon finely grated orange zest

3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

3/4 teaspoon ground ginger

1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

6 ounces dark rum

3 cups boiling water

Fresh orange juice

1. Beat butter, sugar, orange zest, cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg with a mixer on medium speed until combined, about 1 minute.
2. Combine 2 tablespoons spiced butter with 1 1/2 ounces (3 tablespoons) dark rum in each of 4 heatproof glasses. Pour 3/4 cup boiling water over each, and stir. Top each with a squeeze of fresh orange juice.

AND if you are going to forward emails, PLEASE DELETE THE EMAIL ADDRESSES that are on the header!

Yesterday late afternoon the RR Gang met at the Double R in town for Taco Tuesday and to celebrate PatC's birthday (that was on the 10th). Hard tacos, soft tacos .. beef, chicken, fish. All good and cheap! They do pour a real decent glass of wine for $4 too.

Today is my good pal, Mr. Poopy Pants's birthday! HAPPY BIRTHDAY BILLY PATTERSON!!!!! Your present is in the mail!

Today is also Deputy "Big Al" Rodriguez's birthday. HAPPY BIRTHDAY AL!! Al and I in 2007 when he stopped by on his way hunting in Montana.... or somewhere like that! It was just after Jerry died and he wanted to stop and give me a hug! Al worked at ELA when I was there. My buddy!

And it would have been my sister, Betty's, 65th wedding anniversary. Sadly Joe passed away a number of years ago.

Joe, Betty, Marion, and mini Me!! (Everyone has always been taller than me! Fortunately Tucker and Sami are still shorter!

 

Yesterday I had a great chat with an old friend, you Temple people will remember Barry Perrou..... We talked for quite a while. Nice. Reminiscing ... fun.

 

Last night I woke about 3 am with a sore throat. UGH. So, I poured ½ cup of water and added 1 T. apple cider vinegar and sipped it down slowly. I know, I know, it tastes like you are drinking out of a pickle jar! BUT.... the sore throat went away and is still gone! So there. I swear by that stuff!

National Strawberry Ice Cream Day

(Whaaaaaa....in January?? I love it, but I'll pass today.... Sort of apropos this pink ice cream day would be Bill's birthday!)

 

It's the third musketeer of ice cream flavors. It's no coincidence that strawberry ice cream makes up one-third of every quart of Neapolitan. After vanilla and chocolate, strawberry is the next most popular flavor of ice cream. As such, it has earned its own day of recognition, National Strawberry Ice Cream Day. Go ahead, you can still eat ice cream in January!
