Dave's Taco Tuesday Party ~ Chocolate Milkshake Day

Good 41º morning.

Yesterday Maggie and I took a run to town to mail some cards... On the way the ambulance was at the grammar school. Wondering......

Came home and I made the Black Bean Salsa to take to PJ and Dave's for Big D's birthday party. (His birthday is actually today...HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAVE!)

Salsa ingredients:

Drain and rinse 2 cans black beans, drain 1 can Rotel Diced Tomatoes & Chiles, 1 can Rotel Diced Tomatoes with Lime and Cilantro, drain 1 can whole corn, dice 1/2 small red onion, squeeze juice from 1 lime. Mix.

This is great with Scoops and/or on tacos. Speaking of tacos... PJ's tacos were great. Beef and chicken. Soft or hard shells. Pam made mini orange cupcakes (OMGOOD) and Tom made Dave's 'birthday apple pie'. (Another OMGOOD!)

Debbie tried and tried to get into the hammock... with no luck. Tom looked on...

Good par-tay kids!

Patriot Day ~ Football Season! ~ Steak Dinner ~ Hot Crossed Buns

Good 42º morning. Supposed to be partially cloudy today. Was very nice yesterday. Comfortable, not hot!

Today is a humbling day. Memory kicks in to that horrible tragic morning and all the visuals on the TV. Unspeakable. I was wrapped in a blanket in front of the TV all day. It still makes me so sad to the point of being teary-eyed. Several years ago I put together an album of photos from that day. You can see it here on my Webshots page....
If you click on the first picture it will enlarge. Top right you can go to "next" and "previous" photos and also make the picture full screen.

I didn't mention on my blog yesterday the fun Sunday Football day it was. My Patriots rocked over the Titans 34 -13! Kristen and Olga's Jets bombed Bill's Buffalo Bills 48-28.
Brian's Colts succumbed to Phil & Suzanne's Bears 41-21. Jeannie's 49ers lauded over the Packers 30-22. Peyton's new team the Broncos whipped the Steelers 31-19. And YEAH Jerry's Cowboys whomped the Giants 24-17!! (poor Eli. Boo hoo boo hoo.) And then there was last night with the Raiders (boo) and Cliff's Chargers......YEAH Chargers 22, Raiders 14! And so it goes, football season has begun.

Yesterday my neighbor friends, Frank & Cindy came over. They brought me birthday gifts. (So, they are late. It is my 'birthday month'!!!) Included was a yummy bottle of Chardonnay, some pansies to plant, and a BIG THEEK STEAK! The steak came from "Jerry's Custom Meat Cutting and Smoking" in Central Point. I put it in some marinade immediately. This is my favorite marinade....

1 T. Montreal Steak Seasoning
2 cups red wine
2/3 cup olive oil

I heated a vegetable rice mixture, in a little olive oil, that I got from Target and added some fresh diced tomatoes....

The steak was cooked on my George Foreman Grill....

To serve I topped the steak with some Boursin cheese
,
cut up some yellow bell pepper and plated it with the rice....
AWESOME!

Today is the birthday of a couple of special people.... my friend (former LASD Reserve and Choirboy) Jim Hoffman. HAPPY BIRTHDAY JIM!! And my dental hygienist Liz O'Conner. HAPPY BIRTHDAY LIZ!

Andy & Linda ~ Jeannie ~ Jasper ~ TV Dinner

Good 47º morning. Stayed nice yesterday and just got warm in the late afternoon when the sun was on the front of the house. It's only supposed to be in the high 70º's today and climb back to the 100º range by Thursday. Joy.

I had a great, but too short, visit yesterday with Linda and Andy. Andy was in the Marines with Jerry. Linda and I have become the closest of friends. They were on their way from north of Sacramento up to Washington. We had a glass of wine and then they headed out. Linda promises to return later in the Fall so we can visit extra long! Bruiser greeted Andy and was happy to have him pet him and rub his tummy!

Andy has a shop in Woodland, Ca. and he feeds and is friends with the feral cats there. They know.

I'm sad, I haven't seen the hens and chicks lately. The Tom have not been around either. I think it has to do with that bobcat taking up residence in this area. They must have relocated.   :o(    The deer have been sparce too, but did see 'mom' and two of her young fawns yesterday.

Today is a very special birthday, my BFF Jeannie is turning 39 again! LOL. HAPPY BIRTHDAY JEANNIE! SOW Sista. Sisterfriend. Have fun at 7 Feathers and on the coast. Wine for me. Miss you.

BIG celebration when you return! And... I promise not to wrap crime scene tape all around your gate this time!!! (hmmm.....)

I had a chat with Kristen yesterday. She's doing better and her girlfriend was taking her to the market. Getting out is good. The new puppy, Jasper, is doing great! When she lays on the couch, both pups are right there with her! Here is Jasper with my Alex JellyBean ...

Gerald Thomas, a C.A. Swanson & Sons executive, had a big problem. What to do with about 270 tons of left over Thanksgiving turkey.
"After Thanksgiving, Swanson had ten refrigerated railroad cars -- each containing 520,000 pounds of unsold turkeys -- going back and forth across the country in refrigerated railroad box cars, because there was not enough storage in warehouses. We were challenged to come up with a way to get rid of the turkeys," said Thomas.
He got the breakthrough idea from the trays used for airline food service. And the TV dinner was born.

The first production order was for 5,000 dinners, thought to be a big gamble at the time. They had about two dozen women armed with ice cream scoops filling the new trays at night.
The first TV dinner featured turkey, corn bread dressing and gravy, buttered peas and sweet potatoes. It cost 98 cents and came in a box resembling a TV.
The 5,000 dinners proved to be a gross underestimation. Swanson sold 10,000,000 of them that year.
Of note, most folks didn't own freezers back then, so the dinners were bought and prepared the very same day.
A frozen fried chicken dinner was introduced in 1955. Turkey is still the most popular Swanson TV dinner, except in Fort Worth-Dallas, where fried chicken is the favorite. (Don't ask)

In 1962 they stopped calling them TV Dinners.
