Ub Iwerks (full name: Ubbe Ert Iwerks, March 24, 1901 – July 7, 1971) was a two-time Academy Award winning American animator, cartoonist, character designer, inventor, and special effects technician, who co-created Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and Mickey Mouse with Walt Disney.

When he was 18 years old, Iwerks met and befriended Walt Disney who was a fellow employee at the Pesman-Rubin Commercial Art Studio in Kansas City. After an unsuccessful attempt to go into business for themselves in 1920, the two young artists went to work at the Kansas City Film Ad Company (which produced animated advertisements for local movie theaters).

After setting up his own Hollywood cartoon studio in 1923, Disney invited Iwerks to join the organization the following year. When the distributor of Disney’s popular Oswald the Lucky Rabbit cartoon series raided Disney’s staff in 1927, only Iwerks remained loyal to his old Kansas City colleague. The two men came up with a new cartoon character named Mickey Mouse.

Iwerks received Academy Awards for his technical achievements in 1960 and 1965 and an additional nomination for his special-effects work in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds (1963).

 

Iwerks was born in Kansas City, Missouri. His father was born in the village of Uttum in East Frisia (northwest Germany, today part of the municipality of Krummhörn) and immigrated to the United States in 1869. The elder Iwwerks, who worked as a barber, was 57 when Ub was born and had fathered and abandoned several previous children and wives. When Ub was a teenager, he abandoned him as well, forcing the boy to drop out of school and work to support his mother. Iwerks despised his father and never spoke of him; upon learning that he had died, he reportedly said, "Throw him in a ditch." Ub's full name, Ubbe Ert Iwwerks, can be seen on early Alice Comedies that he signed. Several years later he simplified his name to "Ub Iwerks", sometimes written as "U. B. Iwerks".

He is the father of Disney Legend Don Iwerks and grandfather of documentary film producer Leslie Iwerks.

Mashed potatoes always offer stick-to-your-ribs comfort, and our Mashed Potato Casserole is a new twist on a family favorite side dish recipe. Our spuds will never be duds if we make 'em this way!

 

5 pounds potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks

1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened

2 tablespoons minced onion

2 eggs

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

1 1/2 teaspoons salt

1 teaspoon black pepper

 

1 (2.8-ounce) can French-fried onions, coarsely chopped

 

Preheat oven to 325º. Coat a 2-quart casserole dish with cooking spray.

 

1. Place potatoes in a soup pot, add just enough water to cover them, and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to medium and cook 12 to 15 minutes, or until fork-tender; drain.
    
2. In a large bowl, with an electric beater on medium speed, beat potatoes and cream cheese until smooth. Add onion, eggs, flour, parsley, salt, and pepper, and continue to beat until well blended.
    
3. Spoon potato mixture into prepared casserole dish. Sprinkle with French-fried onions and bake 35 to 40 minutes, or until heated through and edges are golden.

National Play Monopoly Day on November 19th recognizes the iconic board game that lands us on Park Place, Boardwalk or even in jail.

Known as one of the most popular board games in the world, Monopoly was originally based on a board game designed by Elizabeth Magie in 1902. Since then, the game has been played by an estimated 500 million people since 1935. 

The object of the game is to collect as many properties as you can to create a monopoly. When players land on your property, you get to collect rent. The more properties you own, the more money you make, too. But watch out, there are taxes and other fees involved. To win the game, you need to bankrupt your opponents and be the last landowner standing. Many families have house rules that make the game more interesting, too. 

Monopoly also comes in numerous versions. Do you enjoy a particular book or movie franchise or hobby? The game likely comes in themes focusing on famous characters and likely scenarios. How about sports teams or pop culture? Monopoly money goes there, too!

Monopoly was  published by Parker Brothers, an American toy and game manufacturer since 1883.

Interesting about Seattle....

 

 

Seattle is one of the only major cities in the United States to be named after a Native American chief.

 Chief Seattle was the leader of the Duwamish and Suquamish Native American tribes in what is now Washington state. The chief is best remembered as a respected leader among his tribes and as a devoted ecologist who pursued a path of mutual respect and cooperation with the white settlers. Chief Seattle had proved to be so friendly and welcoming, the settlers named their new settlement in his honor. Ironically, one year after the chief's death, Native Americans were banned from residing in Seattle, Washington, the city that bears his name.

 

Seattle (/siˈætəl/  is a seaport city on the West Coast of the United States. It is the seat of King County, Washington. With a 2020 population of 737,015, it is the largest city in both the state of Washington and the Pacific Northwest region of North America. The Seattle metropolitan area's population is 4.02 million, making it the 15th-largest in the United States. Its growth rate of 21.1% between 2010 and 2020 makes it one of the nation's fastest-growing large cities.

Seattle is situated on an isthmus between Puget Sound (an inlet of the Pacific Ocean) and Lake Washington. It is the northernmost major city in the United States, located about 100 miles south of the Canadian border. A major gateway for trade with northern Asia, Seattle is the fourth-largest port in North America in terms of container handling as of 2015.

 

The Seattle area was inhabited by Native Americans for at least 4,000 years before the first permanent European settlers. Arthur A. Denny and his group of travelers, subsequently known as the Denny Party, arrived from Illinois via Portland, Oregon, on the schooner Exact at Alki Point on November 13, 1851. The settlement was moved to the eastern shore of Elliott Bay and named "Seattle" in 1852, in honor of Chief Si'ahl of the local Duwamish and Suquamish tribes. Today, Seattle has high populations of Native, Scandinavian, Asian American and African American people, as well as a thriving LGBT community that ranks sixth in the United States by population.

 

Logging was Seattle's first major industry, but by the late 19th century, the city had become a commercial and shipbuilding center as a gateway to Alaska during the Klondike Gold Rush. Growth after World War II was partially due to the local Boeing company, which established Seattle as a center for aircraft manufacturing. The Seattle area developed into a technology center from the 1980s onwards with companies like Microsoft becoming established in the region; Microsoft founder Bill Gates is a Seattleite by birth. Bake up a cinn-sational treat with our recipe for Cinnamon Loaves. This cake-like bread recipe starts off with a box of cake mix, which makes it even easier to bake this cinnamon-flavored dessert bread whenever you get the cravings!

 

• 1 (15-1/4-ounce) package yellow cake mix
• 4 eggs
• 3/4 cup vegetable oil
• 3/4 cup water
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 1/2 cup sugar
• 3 tablespoons ground cinnamon

 

 

1. Preheat oven to 350º. Coat 2 (8- x 4-inch) loaf pans with cooking spray and dust with flour.
    
2. In a large bowl with an electric mixer, beat cake mix, eggs, oil, water, and vanilla 3 minutes. Pour half the batter evenly into loaf pans.
    
3. In a small bowl, stir together sugar and cinnamon; sprinkle half the mixture evenly over batter in loaf pans. Distribute remaining batter evenly between loaf pans and sprinkle with remaining sugar mixture. Gently swirl with a knife.
    
4. Bake 45 minutes, or until a wooden toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pans on wire racks.

 

1. ***Follow these directions to make five mini gift loaves: Pour half the batter evenly into five greased and floured 3-1/4- x 5-3/4-inch disposable loaf pans. Sprinkle evenly with half of sugar mixture. Pour remaining batter into pans; sprinkle with remaining sugar mixture. Gently swirl with a knife. Bake at 350º for 35 minutes, or until a wooden toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

Making his debut on November 18, 1928, we commemorate the birth of that ever lovable mouse that was once a rabbit called Oswald. To get to the beginning of the story, we have to go back to 1927 when Walt Disney first sketched a floppy eared bunny while under contract to Universal Studios. The events that unraveled brought us Mickey Mouse.

HISTORY

Mickey Mouse came under the roller coaster events of Oswald’s success and Universal’s disappointing contract negotiations. Disney Bros. Studio took their leave of both the studio and Oswald and set to work creating a character who would go on to lead the company into the future.

From a rabbit named Oswald to a mouse named Mortimer, eventually, the squeaky-voiced rodent was dubbed Mickey. He flopped in two animated short films without any success. Then on November 18, 1928, Mickey’s star was born. The first animation synchronized to music and sound effects, Steamboat Willie premiered in New York.

Within a year, a Mickey Mouse Club popped up in Salem, Oregon. This particular club offered admission as a fundraiser for the Salvation Army with a donation of either a potato or a small toy and a penny. According to a December 22, 1929, Statesman Journal (Salem, Oregon) article, $12 and three truckloads of potatoes and toys collected by eager new members.

Remember, the stock market crashed just 20 days before Mickey Mouse was born. That a cute little mouse could bring smiles to the faces of children at an uncertain time really isn’t such a surprise.

Generally, new members joined the club by completing an admission form obtained from a local merchant and attending meetings held during matinees at local movie houses. The price of admission often was reduced for good deeds and report cards. By the end of 1930, the Mickey Mouse Clubs had spread across the country.

In 1935, animator Fred Moore gave Mickey a new look that enabled a more fluid movement to the animation.

A makeover in 1935 by animator Fred Moore gave Mickey the look we are familiar with today. The big eyes, white gloves, and the pert little nose. More lovable than ever before, he propelled himself even further into the hearts of children everywhere.

His companions Minnie, Donald, Goofy and Pluto joined him along the way, bringing vaudevillian comedy with them.
