Accident (/ˈæksədɛnt/ AK-sə-dent) is a town in Garrett County, Maryland, United States. The population was 325 at the 2010 census.

 

Accident has been noted for its unusual place name. A person from Accident is called an "Accidental".

 

Accident was one of the early settlements in the far west of Maryland. The name originates about the time of the 1786 land survey. Though the origin or meaning of the name is unknown, one popular story says that Brooke Beall and William Deakins, Jr., friends from Prince George's County, were conducting separate surveys in the area at the time and "by accident" Deakins claimed land already surveyed by Beall.

When it comes to baking, these two ingredients go together in a timeless way. We're talking about chocolate and walnuts! Our easy pastry recipe for Chocolate Walnut Bites is a simple way to enjoy that classic combination. Make them for a picnic, a potluck, or just to have around the house. You can't go wrong. The best part? They're bite-sized!

 

• 1 stick (1/2 cup) butter, softened
• 1 (3-ounce) package cream cheese, softened
• 1 cup all-purpose flour
• 1/3 cup chocolate chips
• 1/4 cup chopped walnuts
• 2 tablespoons light brown sugar

 

1. In a large bowl with an electric mixer, beat butter and cream cheese until creamy. Add flour, beating until well combined. Cover and chill dough 30 minutes.
2. Preheat oven to 325º.
3. In a small bowl, combine remaining ingredients.
4. Shape chilled dough into about thirty 1-inch balls. Place each dough ball in ungreased mini muffin cups. Using your thumb, press dough into each cup, forming a crust. Spoon chocolate chip mixture evenly into crusts.
5. Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until center is firm and crust is golden. Cool slightly, then remove to a wire rack to cool completely.

On October 23rd, the Swallows Depart from San Juan Capistrano Day marks the migration of thousands of swallows. 

The famous cliff swallows of San Juan Capistrano leave town every year in a swirling mass near the Day of San Juan (October 23). They head for their winter vacation spot 6,000 miles south in Goya, Corrientes, Argentina. Each year, they return on or about March 19th – St. Joseph Day. Their migration has been marked for generations. 

Cliff swallows are cousins of barn swallows and purple martins.

Swallows have long, narrow wings, forked tails, and weak, tiny feet. Incredibly graceful in flight, they feed on the wing, catching insects in their wide mouths; they can effortlessly make abrupt changes in direction or speed as they feed.

Clingstone House is a remarkable 105 year old mansion on a  piece of rock in the Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, USA. The rock is so small that it can be at the most called a micro islet. The three storey, 23 roomed mansion, with 10 bedrooms, was built in 1905 by J.S. Lovering Wharton in consultation with artist William Trost Richards.

Although the house was designed to withstand hurricane winds, however it was badly damaged by a hurricane in 1938 and remained vacant for about 20 years. In 1961 it was purchased by an architect Henry Wood, a distant cousin of Wharton, who renovated it and now maintains it by using a very imaginative method of inviting about 70 of his friends and relatives each year to stay with him and help him in carrying out the annual repair work including cleaning of 65 windows. The mansion is locally known as "The House on a Rock".

• 1 (15-ounce) can solid pack pumpkin
• 1 (5-ounce) can evaporated milk
• 3 eggs
• 1 cup packed brown sugar
• 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 1 (15-1/4-ounce) package yellow cake mix
• 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted
• 1/2 cup chopped pecans
• 1/2 cup cinnamon baking chips (see Note.)

 

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Coat a 9- x 13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
2. In a medium bowl, combine pumpkin, evaporated milk, eggs, brown sugar, pumpkin pie spice, and salt; mix well and pour into baking dish.
3. In a medium bowl, combine cake mix and butter; stir until crumbly. Sprinkle evenly over pumpkin mixture, then sprinkle with pecans and cinnamon baking chips.
4. Bake 50 to 55 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool completely, then serve.

 

***Can't find cinnamon baking chips? No problem! You can substitute with chocolate chips or butterscotch chips.

National Nut Day is observed annually on October 22. This day is NOT about the neighbor that lives down the street or the crazy co-worker. It is a food holiday celebrating a healthy and nutritious snack.

Nuts are a highly prized food and energy source and are a primary source of nutrients for both humans and wildlife.   Many of them are used in cooking, eaten raw, sprouted, or roasted as a snack food and pressed for oil that is used in cookery and cosmetics.

The fats found in nuts, for the most part, are unsaturated fats, including monounsaturated fats.

Many nuts are excellent sources of vitamins E and B2. They are also rich in protein, folate fiber, and essential minerals such as magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, copper, and selenium.

Nuts are essential to animals, especially those in temperate climates, as they store acorns and other nuts during the autumn months to keep from starving during late fall, all winter, and early spring.

Several studies have shown that those who consume nuts regularly are less likely to suffer from coronary heart disease (CHD).  It was in 1993 that nuts were first linked to protection against CHD. Since that time, many clinical trials have found that consumption of various nuts, such as almonds and walnuts, can lower serum LDL cholesterol concentrations.

One study has shown that people who ate nuts lived two to three years longer than those who did not. Those who were consuming nuts may have been eating less junk food leading to a longer lifespan.

Nuts are healthiest in their raw form.
