Good 45º super smokey morning.

 

The smoke did keep the sun away pretty much and yesterday we topped at 73º.

 

 

Yesterday with that super heavy smoke momma deer and her two fawns were just laying in the field. I took the pictures through the window. Then mom came into my yard to munch on the grass.....

 

 

Later they were all back along with a young buck.... and a bunch of turkeys were out in the pasture.....

On September 11, 2001, Islamic terrorists crashed two airliners into the World Trade Center in New York, causing the 110-story twin towers to collapse. Manhattan Island Was Discovered on September 11, 1609

English explorer Henry Hudson ran into bad weather and accidentally sailed up a river off the Atlantic Ocean while searching for a passage to the Pacific.  In the process he discovers the island of Manhattan. He successfully navigates the river which now bears his name all the way to present-day Albany.

 

On September 11, 1789, a Tax on Whiskey Was Proposed in America

When Alexander Hamilton was appointed as the new U.S. Treasury secretary, he had to come up with ways to pay for that expensive Revolutionary War that freed the country from England. He proposed a whiskey tax because he didn’t think many people would object to such a luxury tax. He was so wrong that it led to the Whiskey Rebellion of 1794.

The Massive Hope Diamond Was Stolen on September 11, 1792

The impressive 45.52 carat Hope Diamond was stolen along with most of the other crown jewels in France during the French Revolution as Louis XVI was kept under house arrest. The unique diamond did not reappear until 1812 in London, and at that time, it was only two days after the statute of limitations had expired on its theft. During the 20 years it had gone missing, someone had cut it into two pieces, and the location of the other recut piece of the original diamond is unknown.

 

On September 11, 1914, Americans Won the Battle of Plattsburgh

This battle, which occurred on Lake Champlain, stopped the British from invading from the north during the War of 1812. Although American militiamen from Vermont and New York were heavily outnumbered, the British suffered heavy losses and retreated into Canada. The two sides sign a peace treaty in Ghent several months later.

 

Pete Rose Broke Ty Cobb’s Record on September 11, 1985

    

It was during the first inning of a game between the Cincinnati Reds and San Diego Padres that switch hitter Pete Rose broke the record for all-time number of hits. With his 4,192 hit, he broke Ty Cobb’s record, which showed that Rose certainly earned his nickname “Charlie Hustle.” Unfortunately, Rose was banned from playing Major League Baseball a few years later because he had been betting on the games, which is a big no-no.

With a name like "Angelic Pasta," you know this recipe's got to be heavenly!  We love recipes with angel hair pasta because they always cook up so quickly! This easy pasta dinner is one of our favorite go-to recipes when you're trying to cook something up in a cinch. Get ready for the shout of "Hallelujah!" around the dinner table when friends and family see that Angelic Pasta is on the menu!

 

• 1 pound angel hair pasta
• 1/4 cup olive oil
• 4 large tomatoes, diced
• 4 cloves garlic, minced
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
• 3/4 cup chicken broth
• 1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese
• 1/4 cup sliced fresh basil (see Note)

 

1. Cook pasta according to package directions; drain and keep warm.
    
2. Meanwhile, in a large skillet over medium-high heat, heat oil until hot. Add tomatoes, garlic, salt, and pepper; cook 5 to 7 minutes or until slightly broken down.
    
3. Add chicken broth and cook 3 to 4 minutes or until heated through.
    
4. Place in a large bowl and add pasta; add Parmesan cheese and basil and toss well. Serve immediately.

 

 

****Don't have fresh basil? You can substitute 1 teaspoon dried basil for the fresh.

National Chocolate Milkshake Day on September 12th brings chocolate and ice cream lovers together. Forget the calories for just this one day and enjoy a sweet tall, thick and delicious, chocolate milkshake!

The term milkshake first appeared in print in 1885. During this period, milkshake referred to an alcoholic beverage described as a “sturdy, healthful eggnog type of drink” blended with eggs, whiskey, and other ingredients. Pharmacies served the drink as a tonic and a treat to customers. By 1900, pharmacies offered this “wholesome drink” with either chocolate, strawberry, or vanilla syrup. 

• The early 1900s – People began asking for this “new treat” with a scoop of ice cream.
• 1911 – Hamilton Beach’s drink mixers began to be used at soda fountains.
• 1922 – Steven Poplawski invented the electric blender or drink mixer.
• Due to the invention of the blender, the milkshake began to take a chipped, aerated, and frothy form as they are today.
• By the 1920s & 1930s, milkshakes became a popular drink at malt shops everywhere. 

Another addition to the milkshake was malted milk powder. Made from malted barley, wheat flour, and dehydrated whole milk, malted milk tastes a bit like toasted caramel. It made its debut around the 1870s as a shelf-stable dry milk product. Add the powder to a chocolate milkshake, and transform the creamy goodness into a malted chocolate milkshake. Along with milkshakes, malted milk milkshakes became popular drinks at soda fountains around the 1920s.

Good 47º SUPER smokey morning. 

 

 

Yesterday, because of the local fires we started off super smokey and stayed that way all day.... and it was windy. Not helpful to stopping the fires! 

Grants Pass was also very smokey.....

 

 Because of the smoke cover we topped at 89º.

Do you love bacon? How about cheese? If you nodded enthusiastically to either of those, then you're about to experience something wonderful...a Bacon and Cheese Lover's Pie. It's a quiche-style dish that's absolutely loaded with cheese, bacon, and some chopped spinach. You'll be smiling from your first forkful to your last.

 

• 1 refrigerated pie crust (from a 17-ounce package)
• 1 1/2 cups (6 ounces) shredded cheddar cheese
• 1 1/2 cups (6 ounces) shredded Swiss cheese
• 1/2 cup real bacon bits
• 1 (10-ounce) package frozen chopped spinach, thawed, drained, and squeezed dry
• 3 eggs
• 1 1/2 cups half-and-half
• 1 teaspoon onion powder
• 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
• 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

 

 

1. Preheat oven to 350º. Place pie crust in a 9-inch deep dish pie plate and flute edges.
    
2. In a medium bowl, combine cheddar and Swiss cheeses; sprinkle half the mixture into bottom of pie crust. Sprinkle bacon bits over cheese, top with spinach, then remaining cheese.
    
3. In the same bowl, combine eggs, half-and-half, onion powder, and pepper; beat until thoroughly mixed. Pour into pie crust; sprinkle with nutmeg. 
    
4. Bake 40 to 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
    
5. Remove from oven and cool on a wire rack 5 minutes before cutting and serving.
