Good 34º dark cloudy morning. 

The gloom yesterday......

Then my Schwans order was delivered by Leon. While we were outside the husband and wife geese were on my house roof, but they didn't stay long enough for me to get a picture... so took this through the wire fence as they landed out in back of the house....

And Mr. Single Goose was on my barn roof.....

Leon was being greeted by Dude and we started talking about our dog's heritage.... he said he's was named Bruno. I laughed, as I had dated Jack Bruno in high school!! 

Yesterday we had some rain and I had a wet dog! Too bad we can't teach our dogs to hold umbrellas when they go out to do their business!

who appeared in more than 50 films, and won two Academy Awards, died of complications from congestive heart failure at age 79.  Here are 5 surprising facts you didn't know about Elizabeth Taylor...

Was there anything more stunning than Taylor's violet eyes and double eyelashes? While Taylor's eyes were not actually violet -- they were dark blue -- they could appear violet because of an excess of melanin pigment. As for those eyelashes, Taylor had a genetic mutation. This mutation, known as lymphedema-distichiassyndrome was caused by a gene called FOXC2. People with this hereditary condition have a double row of eyelashes, which is called distichiasis, and a risk of swollen limbs due to problems in the lymphatic system.

Apparently, 7 percent of people with this mutation also have congenital heart disease, and Taylor did have heart troubles that led to her death.

Taylor landed her first Life cover at the age of 15 and was on the cover 14 times throughout her life. She's been in over a thousand magazines as well, and the only person who's graced the cover of People solo more than she has is Princess Diana.

These days, it seems like every celebrity has their own signature fragrance. But the celebrity perfume and cologne craze all started with Taylor. In 1987, she released her perfume called “White Diamonds“ in collaboration with Elizabeth Arden, Inc. Every year, her perfume still brings in $1 billion in revenue globally.

When producer Walter Wanger was casting for the film Cleopatra, he knew he wanted Taylor to star as the lead role. He called her then-husband, Eddie Fisher, to discuss the movie. Taylor jokingly said to Fisher, “Tell him I’ll do the film for a million dollars.” This type of salary was unheard of in the industry, especially for a female leading lady. But Wanger obliged, and Taylor became the first actress to receive $1 million dollars for a single movie. Taylor later stated, “If someone’s dumb enough to offer me $1 million to make a picture, I’m certainly not dumb enough to turn it down.”

When Taylor married Conrad Hilton Jr. in 1950, her film career had taken off and he had a sizable fortune due to his father’s hotel chain. Though neither of them would have struggled for foot the bill for their 600-guest affair, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer actually paid for the whole thing.

Mexican Taco Meatloaf

"My Mexican grandmother would use leftover corn tortilla chips in our meatloaf and everyone loved it! They all wanted seconds along with the recipe. A delicious Mexican-American comfort food."

• 1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
• 1 cup crushed tortilla chips
• 3/4 cup shredded pepper Jack cheese
• 1 small onion, chopped

• 1 (1 ounce) packet taco seasoning mix
• 2 eggs, beaten
• 1/2 cup milk
• 1/4 cup mild red taco sauce, or more to taste

 

1. Preheat the oven to 350º.

4. Thoroughly combine beef, tortilla chips, pepper Jack cheese, onion, and taco seasoning in a bowl.

7. Whisk eggs, milk, and taco sauce together in a separate bowl. Add to meat mixture and stir until well combined.

10. Press mixture into a 9x5-inch loaf pan and top with a strip of taco sauce down the center.

National Medal of Honor Day on March 25th recognizes all Medal of Honor recipients.

On March 25, 1863, Secretary of War, Edwin Stanton presented the first Medals of Honor (Army) to six members of  “Andrews Raiders” for their volunteering and participation during an American Civil War raid in April of 1862.

Created in 1861, the Medal of Honor is the United States of America’s highest military honor.  It is awarded only to US military personnel by the President of the United States in the name of Congress for personal acts of valor above and beyond the call of duty.

There are three versions of the Medal of Honor; one for the Army, one for the Navy and one for the Air Force, with personnel of the Marine Corps and the Coast Guard receiving the Navy version.

Since its creation, there have been 3,468 Medals of Honor awarded to the country’s soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, and coast guardsmen.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Some federal, state, local, and military organizations may hold events recognizing Medal of Honor recipients. These events may be public or private. Other ways to participate include:

• Volunteering for your local veteran organization
• Donate to a veteran service organization
• Adopt a Medal of Honor grave site

The Rottweiler is a breed of domestic dog, regarded as medium-to-large or large. The dogs were known in German as 'Rottweiler Metzgerhund', meaning Rottweil butchers' dogs, because their main use was to herd livestock and pull carts laden with butchered meat to market.

Although still used to herd stock in many parts of the world, Rottweilers are now also used as search and rescue dogs, as guard dogs, and as police dogs.

The Rottweiler is one of the oldest of herding breeds, known as a mastiff-type dog that was a dependable, rugged dog with great intelligence and guarding instincts.

During their quest to conquer Europe, the Roman legions traveled in large numbers across the continent. The lack of refrigeration meant soldiers brought herds of cattle for food. Drover dogs kept the herd together and guarded it at night.

Around A.D. 74 the Roman army traveled across the Alps and into what is now southern Germany. For the next two centuries the Roman drover dogs were continually used in herding and driving cattle for trade even after the Romans were driven out of the area.

The Rottweiler is good-natured, placid in basic disposition, very devoted, obedient, biddable and eager to work. His appearance is natural and rustic, his behavior self-assured, steady and fearless. He reacts to his surroundings with great alertness and at the same time even-tempered.

Taco Casserole

Craving tacos and you have all the ingredients except taco shells? No problem. This tastes just like tacos and is so easy.

1 pound lean ground beef

1 15oz can spicy chili beans in sauce, undrained

1 cup thick and chunky salsa

2 cups coarsely broken tortilla chips

3/4 cup sour cream

4 medium green onions, sliced

1 medium tomato chopped

1 cup shredded Cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese

Whole tortilla chips, shredded lettuce, and additional salsa, if desired.

Heat oven to 350º.

Cook beef in skillet over medium heat 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until cooked. Drain.

Stir in beans and 1 cup salsa. Heat to boiling, stirring occasionally.

In ungreased 2 qt casserole, place broken chips. Top with beef mixture. Spread with sour cream and sprinkle with onions and cheese.

Bake uncovered 20-30 minutes or until hot and bubbly. Arrange whole tortilla chips around edge of casserole. serve with lettuce and salsa.

When it comes to a National Day, a chocolate covered raisin or a box of them is worth celebrating. On March 24th, National Chocolate Covered Raisin Day celebrates raisins coated in a shell of either milk chocolate or dark chocolate.

Moviegoers have been snacking on chocolate covered raisins for many, many years. Somehow, popcorn, a box of chocolate covered raisins go together perfectly. It doesn’t matter the kind of movie either. Chocolate covered raisins are also a conventional bulk vending item across the country.

More than 1 million Raisinets are produced per hour.

In some countries, chocolate covered raisins are known as Raisinets. Raisinets produced the first and one of the most popular brands of the product. Currently made by Nestle, they are the third-largest selling candy in United States history.  The Blumenthal Chocolate Company introduced the Raisinets to the United States in 1927, and then in 1984, Nestle acquired the brand. However, a large number of other brands produce chocolate covered raisins for us to enjoy.  

Raisins are an excellent source of calcium, potassium, iron, fiber and vitamin B.  When you combine the raisins with dark chocolate, you have a great tasting, healthy snack.
