Good 41º clear sunny morning. 

 

 

Yesterday started off in the freezing area (35º) but the sky was clear and we heated to 66º by noon, then 70º by 1pm. Slow to warm up. We topped at 84º!!!

By Wednesday predictions are for 100º!  A few days ago I turned on the AC, then yesterday the heater. More AC coming!!!

Interesting about Mt. Wilson.............. for you who live/lived in the Southern California area....

 

The Mount Wilson Observatory (MWO) is an astronomical observatory in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The MWO is located on Mount Wilson, a 5,710-foot peak in the San Gabriel Mountains near Pasadena, northeast of Los Angeles.

The observatory contains two historically important telescopes: the 100-inch Hooker telescope, which was the largest aperture telescope in the world from its completion in 1917 to 1949, and the 60-inch telescope which was the largest operational telescope in the world when it was completed in 1908. It also contains the Snow solar telescope completed in 1905, the 60 foot solar tower completed in 1908, the 150 foot solar tower completed in 1912, and the CHARA array, built by Georgia State University, which became fully operational in 2004 and was the largest optical interferometer in the world at its completion.

Due to the inversion layer that traps smog over Los Angeles, Mount Wilson has steadier air than any other location in North America, making it ideal for astronomy and in particular for interferometry. The increasing light pollution due to the growth of greater Los Angeles has limited the ability of the observatory to engage in deep space astronomy, but it remains a productive center, with the CHARA Array continuing important stellar research.

The observatory was conceived and founded by George Ellery Hale, who had previously built the 1 meter telescope at the Yerkes Observatory, then the world's largest telescope. The Mount Wilson Solar Observatory was first funded by the Carnegie Institution of Washington in 1904, leasing the land from the owners of the Mount Wilson Hotel in 1904. Among the conditions of the lease was that it allow public access.

I always loved looking up and seeing Mt. Wilson. 

 

 

 

Bacon Cheese Pull-Aparts.....

 

 

 

Every bite of the pull-apart is filled with the breakfast falvors of bacon, egg, and Cheddar cheese.

 

1 egg

2 T. milk

1 can (16.3oz) Pillsbury Grands Flaky Layers refrigerated Origina biscuits

1 pkg (2.1 oz) precooked bacon, cut into 1/2" pieces (or cook your own)

3 oz (3/4 cup) shredded Cheddar cheese

1/4 cup finely chopped green onions (4 medium)

 

 

Heat oven to 350°. Spray 11x7- or 12x8-inch (2-quart) glass baking dish with cooking spray. In large bowl, beat egg and milk with wire whisk until smooth.

 

Separate dough into 8 biscuits; cut each into quarters. Gently stir biscuit pieces into egg mixture to coat evenly. Fold in bacon, cheese and onions. Spoon mixture into sprayed dish; arrange biscuit pieces in single layer.

 

Bake at 350°. for 23 to 28 minutes or until golden brown. Cut into squares

National Donald Duck Day is observed annually on June 9th.  This day commemorates the birthday of the funny animal cartoon character, Donald Duck. Donald made his first screen debut on June 9, 1934, in The Wise Little Hen.

Donald Duck usually wears a sailor suit with a cap and a black or red bow tie and is most famous for his semi-intelligible speech along with his mischievous and irritable personality

Donald Duck has appeared in more films than any other Disney character.   Donald was also declared in 2002 by TV Guide as one of the 50 greatest cartoon characters of all times.

It was in Donald’s second appearance in Orphan’s Benefit that he was introduced to his comic friend, Mickey Mouse.  Donald’s girlfriend, Daisy Duck, along with his nephews, Huey, Dewey, and Louie, were introduced shortly after that. 

In addition to animation, Donald is also known for his appearance in comic books and newspaper comic strips.

One of Donald Duck’s famous sayings is “Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy.”

HISTORY

National Donald Duck Day first proclaimed by LA Mayor Tom Bradley in 1984 on Donald’s 50th birthday. The world’s most famous duck gave the city a silver statue of himself as a gift in memory of the big day. He also toured the country leading up to the big Disney birthday party bash.

The rain yesterday lasted just a short time... twice during the day we got 5 minutes of light rain.

It stayed cool, by noon only 60º. We topped at 68º.

 

The winds kicked up and the clouds started moving away by early evening.....

And before the sun disappeared the sky was clear!

Interesting about cat whiskers.............

 

Cat's whiskers are very cute, but, in fact, their function is very important. Any cat without its whiskers would be helpless and even inadequate in their behavior.

At the end of their whiskers cats have an organ that works as a sensor and sends tactile signals to the brain. It helps nervous system work properly. It's called a proprioceptor. The main function of this organ is to help them to orientate, control every part of their body in space, and even to measure distance between a cat and some object, for example, prey.

In addition to the eight to 12 cat whiskers your cat has on either side of her nose, she also has shorter whiskers above her eyes, on her chin, and on the backs of her lower front legs.

Cats' whiskers are highly sensitive and feel every small change in the environment, they can even feel the slightest vibration in the air. By the way, whiskers also work as a tactile organ helping cats to “touch” objects around them and identify their shape and quality.

Whiskers also serve as a way for cats to visually measure distance, which is why they are able to leap so quickly and gracefully onto a narrow ledge or out of harm’s way.

 Roasted Asparagus and Mushroom Carbonara

 

 

Prep Time:10 minutes Cook Time:40 minutesTotal Time:50 minutes Servings: 4

Roasted asparagus and mushrooms in a creamy and cheesy egg sauce with plenty of fresh cracked black pepper.

• 1 pound asparagus, trimmed and cut into bite sized pieces
• 8 ounces mushrooms, quartered
• 1 tablespoon olive oil
• salt and pepper to taste
• 8 ounces fettuccine (or pasta of choice) (gluten free for gluten free)
• 4 ounces bacon cut into 1 inch pieces or 4 ounces pancetta, diced
• 1 clove garlic, chopped
• 2 eggs
• 1/2 cup (2 ounces) Parmesan, grated
• plenty of fresh cracked black pepper
• salt to taste
• 1 T chopped parsley

1. Toss the asparagus and mushrooms in the oil, salt and pepper, place on a baking sheet in a single layer and roast in a preheated 400º oven until they start to caramelize, about 20-30 minutes, mixing half way through.
2. Start cooking the pasta as directed on the package.
3. Cook the bacon in a pan, pour off all but a tablespoon of the grease from the pan, add the garlic, cook for 30 second and turn off the heat.
4. Mix the egg, cheese, pepper and salt and parsley in a bowl.
5. Drain the cooked pasta reserving some of the water.
6. Mix the pasta, egg mixture, asparagus and mushrooms into the pan with the bacon, adding reserved pasta water as needed.

Note: To speed things up, about 20 minutes into roasting the asparagus and mushrooms, get your pot of water for the pasta on the stove and start bringing it to a boil.

National Rosé Day is observed annually on the second Saturday in June.  Rosé is probably the oldest known type of wine, dating back as far as 600 BC.  Rosé wines are generally made from red grapes and are very versatile wines that complement many types of food. Rosé is lighter than red wine and deeper than white wine.  The pink color of rosé wine depends on the time the grape skin stays in contact with the juice, also known as maceration.  There are rosé wines that are semi-sparkling or sparkling, with different intensities of sweetness levels and dryness.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Celebrate National Rosé Day by having a bottle of Rosé wine with dinner or simply invite friends over for h’orderves and enjoy each other’s company.

National Rosé Day was submitted to and approved by the registrar of National Day Calendar in October of 2014 by Bodvár – House of Rosés – a rosé house specializing in rosé wines that hopes to raise awareness and give rosé lovers a day to unite together and celebrate.

Yesterday the clouds ...

 

Then finally sunshine, but it was still only 61º.

 

We stayed in the 60ºs until later in the afternoon and topped at 75º. Didn't really expect the rain today. Lots of high school graduations today and hopefully the rain stops or they have the ceremonies indoors. 

 

Bruiser went out and was roaming for awhile. Then he finally came in for his breakfast. After that he decided to nap on my mouse pad!

Interesting about "glass" that is used in movies, photos, and plays...

 

Sugar glass (also called candy glass, edible glass, and breakaway glass) is a brittle transparent form of sugar that looks like glass. It can be formed into a sheet that looks like flat glass or an object, such as a bottle or drinking glass. It is used to simulate glass in movies, photographs and plays. It is much less likely to cause injuries than real glass, and it easily breaks convincingly, making it an excellent choice for stunts.

Sugar glass is made by dissolving sugar in water and heating it to at least the "hard crack" stage approx 300 ° in the candy making process. Glucose or corn syrup is used to prevent the sugar from recrystallizing, by getting in the way of the sugar molecules forming crystals. Cream of tartar also helps by turning the sugar into glucose and fructose.

Because sugar glass is hygroscopic, it must be used soon after preparation, or it will soften and lose its brittle quality.

 

 

 

Asparagus and Double Smoked Bacon Popover

Prep Time:10 minutes Cook Time:35 minutesTotal Time:45 minutes Servings: 4

Asparagus, double smoked bacon and leeks baked on a puffy popover topped with melted cheese!

• 1 pound asparagus, trimmed and cut into 1 inch pieces
• 4 slices bacon, cut into 1 inch pieces
• 1 leek, thinly sliced
• 1 tablespoon butter
• 1/2 cup milk, warm
• 3 large eggs, room temperature
• 1/2 cup flour
• salt and pepper to taste
• 1 cup gruyere, shredded

1. Bring a pan with 1 inch of water to a boil, add the asparagus and cook until it turns bright green.
2. Rinse the asparagus under cold water and pat dry. Cut into bite size pieces.
3. Cook the bacon in a cast iron skillet over medium heat, and set aside on paper towels to drain reserving the grease in the pan.
4. Add the leeks to the pan, saute until tender, about 2-4 minutes, set aside and turn off the heat.
5. Add the butter to the skillet and let it melt.
6. Mix the milk, eggs, flour, salt and pepper and pour it into the pan.
7. Sprinkle the asparagus, bacon, leeks and the cheese over the batter in the pan.
8. Transfer the pan to a preheated 425º oven and bake until puffed and golden brown, about 15-20 minutes.

Each year on the first Friday in June, people participate in National Doughnut or Donut Day.  This day celebrates the doughnut and honors the Salvation Army Lassies, the women that served doughnuts to soldiers during WWI.

In 1917, the original “Salvation Army Doughnut” was first served by the ladies of the Salvation Army.  It was during WWI that the Salvation Army Lassies went to the front lines of Europe.  Home cooked foods, provided by these brave volunteers, were a morale boost to the troops.

The doughnuts were often cooked in oil inside the metal helmets of American soldiers.  American infantrymen were then commonly called “doughboys.”  A more standard spelling is donut.

On this day, many bakeries and coffee shops in the United States offer doughnut deals to their customers.

Celebrate the day by enjoying your favorite doughnut.  

HISTORY

National Doughnut Day was created by The Salvation Army in 1938 to honor the women who served the doughnuts to soldiers in World War I.  This day began as a fund-raiser for Chicago’s Salvation Army.  The goal of their 1938 fund-raiser was to help the needy during the Great Depression.
