Good 35º some ice on the barn roof morning and fog.

 

 

Yesterday we warmed to 63º. The clouds were fluffy and there was blue sky and sun peeking through. Then the sky cleared out and it warmed to 70º! 

 

 

Yesterday I met up with Jean, my DIL Jen's mom, at Brian's office. She had done my taxes so we went over them. Then we went next door to The Vine 

and I bought her lunch. Jean and I both had the portabello sandwich, cooked portabello mushroom on a burger bun with sauteéd onions and lots of cheese! Jean had the regular fries and I had the sweet potato fries with marshmallow dipping sauce. OMGOSH! That was an AWESOME meal!!

Interesting about the Redwoods....

 

The tallest trees in the world are coast redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens). They are evergreen trees, growing up to 300 feet (91 meters)! Coast redwoods, often called California redwoods, can be found in coastal California and coastal Oregon. These trees need humidity, so most of them grow the mountains where moisture level is always sufficient. The tree named Hyperion, 379.7 feet tall, is the tallest of the coastal redwoods and all living trees ever discovered. It was found in 2006.

 

 

 

From Mr. Food.....

Old-fashioned tuna casseroles might take some extra time that we just don't have. That's why we came up with a stove-top way that's quick, easy, and full of flavor! Plus, once this all comes together, we top it off with some potato chips to add a fun texture! Everyone is going to be asking for seconds of our Stove-top Tuna Casserole!

 

• 1 pound rigatoni pasta
• 2 (10.75-ounce) cans condensed cheddar cheese soup
• 2 (12-ounce) cans tuna, drained and flaked
• 1 cup frozen peas
• 1 1/2 cups milk
• 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
• 2 cups crushed potato chips

 

1. In a soup pot, cook pasta according to package directions; drain well. 
2. In the same soup pot, combine soup, tuna, peas, milk, and pepper; mix well. Cook over medium heat 5 minutes or until hot. Add pasta back to soup pot, mix well, and cook 4 to 5 minutes or until heated through.
3. Sprinkle crushed potato chips over the top, and serve.

National Peach Cobbler Day is observed annually on April 13.  It recognizes a delicious dessert that originated during the 19th century.

Unable to make traditional suet puddings due to lack of suitable ingredients and cooking equipment, the settlers instead covered a stewed filling with a layer of uncooked plain biscuits or dumplings, fitted together. When the dish is fully cooked, the surface has the appearance of a cobbled street.  The name may also derive from the fact that the ingredients are “cobbled” together. Some cobbler recipes resemble a thick-crusted, deep-dish pie with both top and bottom crust.

In 2007, the world’s largest peach cobbler was made at the Georgia Peach Festival.  It consisted of:

• 90 lbs of butter
• 150 lbs of sugar
• 150 lbs of flour
• 32 gallons of milk
• 75 gallons of peaches

Yesterday the gloom hung around and we had a bit of rain.

 

 

 

Then James Stewart of All Natural Pest Elimination came and refilled one of the pest bait containers and renewed my contract with the company.

Interesting about Moose....

 

This animal is called the moose in North America and the elk in Eurasia. It belongs to the deer family and represents the largest extant species of it. The distinguishing feature of the moose or the elk is its palmate antlers typical of the males. Other representatives of the deer family usually have dendritic antlers.

Skin color is darker in moose than in elk. – The legs are paler than the body color in moose, whereas elks have darker legs compared to body color. – Additionally, moose has drooping lips, but elk does not.

Moose used to dwell in a wide range, but nowadays, as the result of hunting and human influence, they typically inhabit boreal and mixed deciduous forests of the Northern Hemisphere in temperate to subarctic climates. Moose have been reintroduced to some of their former habitats. A moose can walk from the very first day of its life. Anyway, baby moose (calves) spend the first year of their life with their mothers and leave with the birth of the new calf.

Currently, most moose are found in Canada, Alaska, New England, Scandinavia, Latvia, Estonia and Russia. Moose's special diet consists mostly of terrestrial and aquatic plants, as they are known as herbivores.

 

 

 

This Noodles, Peas 'n' Cheese recipe will help you put dinner together with no fuss. After you've got your main dish set, you just have to mix your veggies and noodles together for this all-in-one easy side dish.

 

 

 

• 1 (12-ounce) package wide egg noodles
• 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter or margarine, melted
• 1 (10 ¾-ounce) can Cheddar cheese soup
• 3/4 cup sour cream
• 2/3 cup milk
• 1 teaspoon onion powder
• 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 1/2 teaspoon white pepper
• 1 (10-ounce) package frozen peas

1. Preheat oven to 350º. Coat a 2-quart casserole dish with cooking spray.
    
2. Cook noodles according to package directions and drain; place in a large bowl and mix with melted butter. 
    
3. In a small bowl, combine remaining ingredients, except peas, until well blended. Add to noodles and mix to evenly coat noodles. Mix in peas then pour mixture into prepared casserole dish.
    
4. Bake 40 minutes, or until top is light golden and crunchy.

 

 

 

Special anniversary today.... Richard (aka Rico Suavé) and his Annette Escalante are celebrating their 22nd Anniversary. HAPPY ANNIVERSARY KIDS!

Rico retired from the Sheriff's Dept. Rico was an LET (Law Enforcement Tech) at the Sheriff's Department Range at BC and he also went to the same high school I did, Woodrow Wilson, but he graduated 20 years after I did!

Yesterday sun at first, then clouds. Got really dark and gloomy and we felt like we were freezing at 52º! Then we warmed all the way up to 55º!

Interesting about poisonous frogs...

 

The harlequin frog is indeed poisonous, it is also known as harlequin poison-dart frog (Oophaga histrionica), is a species of poison dart frog found in the El Chocó region of western Colombia. The frog is normally found on the ground of tropical rain forests, among fallen limbs or leaf litter. Harlequin poison frog has a variety of color morphs, which differ from one valley to the next in its native range. The base color is a bright orange, with a webbing of black over the entire body. Of the color morphs, the base color may be of clear to dull orange, yellow, red, white, or blue.

The web pattern varies from small lines to big lines or speckled, incomplete lines, or a completely black frog with just a few spots. The various color morphs can be found in surprisingly close proximity, with different populations on adjacent hillsides. The Bilsa Biological Station (operated by the Jatun Sacha Foundation) boasts three color morphs—red, yellow, and orange—within their protected area located within Ecuador's Mache and Chindul coastal mountain ranges.

I never knew there were poisoness frogs. None in the USA fortunately, but most in countries way to the south....

Salmon Casserole....

 

Hit the pantry instead of the high seas for the main ingredient in this easy salmon casserole that's so rich and thick it almost tastes like a hearty soup. No-Fuss Salmon Casserole is sure to be a hit with everyone in your family!

 

• 2 (15-ounce) cans red salmon, drained and flaked (skin and bones discarded)
• 2 (10 -ounce) cans condensed cream of celery soup
• 1 (14-ounce) can sliced carrots, drained
• 4 cups cooked elbow macaroni
• 1 small onion, finely chopped
• 1 cup (4 ounces) shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
• 1 cup milk
• 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
• 1/2 cup plain dry bread crumbs
• 2 tablespoons butter, melted

1. Preheat oven to 375 º. Coat a 9- x 13-inch baking dish with cooking spray, set aside.
    
2. In a large bowl, combine salmon, soup, carrots, macaroni, onion, cheese, milk, and pepper; mix well. Spoon mixture into prepared baking dish. 
    
3. In a small bowl, combine bread crumbs and butter; mix well then sprinkle evenly over casserole.
    
4. Bake 45 to 50 minutes, or until heated through and topping is golden.

April 11 is National Pet Day.  While loving our pets is something we do every day, National Pet Day encourages us to pay special attention to pets who may not get that extra attention.  Helping out orphaned pet companions will improve their health and enhance their opportunities for adoption.

Sometimes their human companions aren’t well.  Making sure their forever furry friends are receiving the best of care will help relieve stress and worry.

National Pet Day is an excellent time to do a few checks for your pets.

• Go through your furever family member’s toys. Throw away any items that are no longer safe.
• Maintain your pet-friendly home. Keep cords and toxins secure from your four-legged friends. This includes phone chargers.
• Verify when vaccinations are due and schedule an appointment to update if they are due.
• Check collars to ensure tags are secure and numbers are current. We sometimes forget to update this information when we move or change numbers.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Take supplies to those pets in shelters.  Help a friend with pets who is recovering from an illness.  Adopt a pet.
