Good morning. OMGOSH, when I got up I thought it had snowed, but no, it's 23º!!! EVERYTHING is frozen white!!!!! 

 

Yesterday when the sun came up more snow was visible on my mountain.....

The geese were hanging out on top of my barn....

Yesterday was neighbor Cindy's funeral. Good thing there were boxes of Kleenex in the chapel! Everyone was teary. All of her family and friends were there. Nice group of people. Sweet. Lots of hugs going around. Met one of her sisters, Penny, who is living in Texas now. Looked so much like Cindy. I'm sure Cindy made sure the sun was out yesterday. It was a beautiful day! After the service in Central Point there was a short graveside service at Rogue River's Historic Woodville Cemetary.  It was established in the late 1800's with the oldest grave dated at 1885.

Interesting about eye color....

 

Melanin is the pigment that changes people's skin,hair and eye color. The more melanin present the darker the eyes will appear. So, obviously, people with brown eyes have more melanin and lighter shades(blue/green) have less.

Besides giving our eyes color, melanin helps protect them from the sun. While all eyes have sensitivity to the sun’s harmful rays, light eyes are much more sensitive to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays than darker eyes because they have less pigment.

Both urobilin and phytochrome are also types of pigment. Phytochrome is found in plants and urobilin is the pigment that turns your urine yellow. Melatonin isn't a pigment at all, its a hormone produced by the pineal gland that regulates sleep and wakefulness.

On a side note, eye color has been the source of superstition through the years. The mystically-inclined believe the eyes are the windows to the soul and eye color shows a person's talents. Some personality traits attributed to eye color are: Blue-eyed people have rich imaginations.Those with green eyes have sharp minds.Hazel eyes indicate passionate souls.People with brown eyes are calm but have underlying passion.

 

 

LUCKY Chinese Noodles

From Mr. Food....

In China, long noodles are eaten during the New Year to symbolize a wish for a long life. Whether or not you celebrate, we think everyone could agree on living a long, happy, and healthy life, which is why we've come up with our own way of making Lucky Chinese Noodles!

What You'll Need

• 1 pound spaghetti
• 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
• 2 carrots, peeled, cut in half, and thinly sliced diagonally
• 4 cloves garlic, minced
• 1/3 cup soy sauce
• 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
• 3/4 cup sliced scallions

 

1. In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook spaghetti to desired doneness; drain and set aside.
    
2. Add oil to the pot and saute carrots and garlic over medium heat 5 to 7 minutes, or until tender. Add remaining ingredients except spaghetti, and simmer 2 to 3 minutes, or until heated through. Return spaghetti to the pot, gently toss until evenly coated, heat 1 to 2 more minutes or until hot, then serve.

Alfredo di Lelio, an Italian restaurateur, created  Fettuccine Alfredo in 1908.  After his wife had given birth to their first son that year, she did not have an appetite.  To help encourage her to eat, he created a dish of noodles, cheese and butter.   She liked the dish so much that she thought he should put it on the menu at his small restaurant in Rome.  Everyone around the world has been enjoying this dish ever since.  Today it is one of the most popular pasta dishes in America.

We have learned the history of Fettuccine Alfredo. However, research has failed to find the creator of this day.

History of Alfredo Di Lelio, creator in 1908 of “Fettuccine All ‘Alfredo” (Fettuccine Alfredo), now served by his nephew Ines Di Lelio, at the restaurant “Il Vero Alfredo” – “Alfredo Di Roma” in Rome, Piazza Augusto Imperatore 30

With reference of your article (for which I thank you), I have the pleasure to tell you the history of my grandfather Alfredo Di Lelio, who is the creator of “Fettuccine all’Alfredo” (“Fettuccine Alfredo”) in 1908 in the “trattoria” run by his mother Angelina in Rome, Piazza Rosa (Piazza disappeared in 1910 following the construction of the Galleria Colonna / Sordi).

This “trattoria” of Piazza Rosa has become the “birthplace of fettuccine all’Alfredo”. More specifically, as is well known to many people who love the “fettuccine all’Alfredo”, this famous dish in the world was invented by Alfredo Di Lelio concerned about the lack of appetite of his wife Ines, who was pregnant with my father Armando (born February 26, 1908). Alfredo di Lelio opened his restaurant “Alfredo” in 1914 in Rome and in 1943, during the war, he sold the restaurant to others outside his family. In 1950 Alfredo Di Lelio decided to reopen with his son Armando his restaurant in Piazza Augusto Imperatore n.30 “Il Vero Alfredo” (“Alfredo di Roma”), whose fame in the world has been strengthened by his nephew Alfredo and that now managed by me, with the famous “gold cutlery” (fork and spoon gold) donated in 1927 by two well-known American actors Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks (in gratitude for the hospitality). I celebrate every year (as this year) in my restaurant (founded by my grandfather Alfredo Di Lelio) the USA Holiday of. fettuccine all’Alfredo (February 7). Good 33º  SUPER foggy morning.

Yesterday the freeze, 26º , was followed by snow at 8:30am. 

By 10am it had warmed to 32º and the snow stopped.... by noon it had all melted. 

One of the things I love about living here in Southern Oregon is that when it snows, we never in the last 20 years I have lived here, had to shovel or chain up!

Interesting about braille ...

LOUIS BRAILLE (1809–1852) was born in Coupvray, a town in north central France, on January 4, 1809. At the age of three, he accidentally blinded himself in one eye with a stitching awl taken from his father's leather workshop. His other eye went blind because of sympathetic ophthalmia, an inflammation of both eyes following trauma to one.

After hearing a presentation on a system called "night writing" created by Charles Barbier, he became inspired to improve it and began experimenting with a raised dot system that would be an improvement upon the existing embossed letter system that was currently being used to teach reading to the visually impaired.

In 1825, just barely 16-years old, Braille created a code of six dots arranged in two parallel rows, each set of rows representing a letter. This configuration was simpler than Barbier’s system, but still versatile enough to allow for up to 64 variations, enough for all the letters of the French alphabet and punctuation.

By the later nineteenth century braille had been adopted throughout most of the world, except the US, who held out until 1916.

 Farmer's Breakfast Bake is a spin on an old favorite. Sort of a cross between a quiche and a tart, this breakfast dish features an amazing hash brown crust and creamy cheese layer your whole family will love!

 

• 1 (20-ounce) package refrigerated shredded hash browns
• 4 tablespoons butter, melted
• 4 eggs
• 3/4 cup half-and-half
• 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
• 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
• 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
• 1/3 cup diced ham

1. Preheat oven to 450º . Coat a 9-inch deep dish pie plate with cooking spray.
2. In a medium bowl, combine potatoes and butter until evenly coated. Press potatoes into bottom and up sides of prepared pie plate to form a crust. Bake 30 minutes or until crust begins to brown.
3. Meanwhile, in a small bowl, combine eggs, half-and-half, and pepper; mix well.
4. Sprinkle cheeses and ham over crust. Pour egg mixture slowly over cheeses and return to oven.
5. Reduce temperature to 350º and bake 30 minutes or until set in center. Let cool 5 minutes; slice and serve.

On February 6 National Lame Duck Day recognizes the ratification of the 20th Amendment to the United States Constitution or the Lame Duck Amendment.

The term “lame duck” originated as a description of stockbrokers in 1700s England who could not pay off their debts. The name later carried over to those in business who, while known to be bankrupt, would continue to do business.

In politics a lame duck is a person currently holding a political office who has either:

• lost a re-election bid
• chosen not to seek another term
• been prevented from running for re-election due to a term limit
• holds a position that has been eliminated

Prior to the ratification of the 20th Amendment to the United States Constitution, there was for Congress a 13-month delay between election day and the day the newly elected officials took office. In the case of a lame duck, this was a 13 month notice his or her job was terminating crippling their influence. Hence the ‘lame’ or injured duck.

An awful lot of people are confused as to just what is meant by a lame duck Congress. It’s like where some fellows worked for you and their work wasn’t satisfactory and you let ’em out, but after you fired ’em, you let ’em stay long enough so they could burn your house down.  – Will Rogers

The same applied to the president. The 20th Amendment changed the date the newly elected president took office from March 4th to January 20th.

During a lame duck session, members of Congress are no longer accountable to their constituents. It is possible for their focus to switch to more personal gain instead of acting on behalf of their constituents with an eye toward re-election.

The 20th Amendment shortened this period from 13 months to 2 months.  While lame duck sessions still occur (20 such sessions have occurred since the amendment took effect in 1935), there is less time for sweeping legislation to be approved.  Even so, lame duck Congresses have declared war, impeached a president, censured a senator and passed the Homeland Security Act among other actions.

It is also considered a time when the peaceful transition of power occurs.  Preparations take place for the out-going president to leave office and the newly elected president to take over the role.

If you know a Lame Duck:  Say thank you, give recognition for their success and support for their future.
