Jimmy Schumacher ~ Thanksgiving Pictures

Good  40º cloudy morning. Yesterday it stayed cloudy until afternoon when we got sun and some blue sky!

Yesterday morning I met up with Jean, Brian, Jen, Tucker, Sami and Jen's cousin Marie for the graveside service for Jen's brother, Jimmy. He passed away in May at only 55 years old. Here's the family at Christmas 3 years ago ... L-R Jen, Jean, Sami, Marie, Brian, Tucker, and Jimmy 

A quick at Safeway for a few things (saw Jean and Marie there!) and then Ace for some cracked corn and home.

Jean cooked the turkey, pumpkin pies, green beans, gravy,

Jen made mashed potatoes, and yams.

Lam cooked some Morel mushrooms he  found in the forest and his dad, Kim made egg rolls.

I brought the deviled eggs, Mother's Rolls, and a cheesecake and a pumpkin cheesecake pie.

1703 – The Great Storm of 1703, the greatest windstorm ever recorded in the southern part of Great Britain, reaches its peak intensity which it maintains through November 27. Winds gust up to 120 mph, and 9,000 people die. 9,000!!!

1759 – An earthquake hits the Mediterranean destroying Beirut and Damascus and killing30,000-40,000. !!!

1839 – A cyclone slams India with high winds and a 40 foot storm surge, destroying the port city of Coringa (which has never been completely rebuilt). The storm wave sweeps inland, taking with it 20,000 ships and thousands of people. An estimated 300,000 deaths result from the disaster. 30,000!!! These numbers are hard to fathom!

1926 – The deadliest November tornado outbreak in U.S. history strikes on Thanksgiving day. 27 twisters of great strength are reported in the Midwest, including the strongest November tornado, an estimated F4, that devastates Heber Springs, Arkansas. There are 51 deaths in Arkansas alone, 76 deaths and over 400 injuries in all.

1963 – President John F. Kennedy is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

1987 – Typhoon Nina pummels the Philippines with category 5 winds of 165 mph and a surge that destroys entire villages. At least 1,036 deaths are attributed to the storm.

2009 - my beautiful and loving Yukon had to be put to rest.

... and this day in 1929 was the birth of Patty's dear brother and my friend, Hal Tollison.....Hal passed away in 2008. RIP Hal

Later it was reruns for dinner. Chair, wine, TV... S.W.A.T. (if you haven't seen it, it's LAPD SWAT and they show a lot of LA in the scenes.), NYPD Blue, and the news.

Today is National Parfait Day.

A parfait consists of  layers of ice cream, whipped cream, and any combination of syrups and fruits.  Yes, it's basically a fancy word for a sundae. And, it's usually served in a fancy glass.

Thanksgiving Dinner

Good 42º super foggy morning. 

Yesterday the sun came and went... we got some rain too.

Thanksgiving yesterday was at Grandma Jean's house ... Brian, Jen, Tucker, Sami, Cousin Marie, Brian's neighbor Lam and his wife and two little girls and Lam's Dad   ..... Grandma Jean and me.

National Sardines Day

Sardines are a

popular

food regularly consumed by millions of

people therefore they surely deserve their

own national day.

The term “sardines” refers to several types of small, oily fish belonging to the family Clupeidae. This term is thought to have come from the Mediterranean island of Sardinia, around which these fish used to be abundant.

Sardines are a very nutrient-rich fish. They are high in vitamins B2, B3 and B12, vitamin D, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, and iron. They are also a valuable source of omega-3 fatty acids which are essential for normal metabolism but cannot be produced by the human body on its own. Omega-3 fatty acids are useful for our cardiovascular system.

Sardines are typically sold canned. Before being canned, sardines are washed, beheaded, and cooked by steam-cooking or deep-frying. Then the fish are dried. They can be packed either in olive, soybean, or sunflower oil, water, or a tomato, mustard or chili sauce. Fresh sardines can be pickled, grilled or smoked.

To celebrate the National Sardines Day, you can eat some sardines on toast or cook a more complicated dish containing sardines – it's up to you!
