Yesterday afternoon I looked out and here was a one elk. She was certainly dark in color.. not like the usual..she looked at me for a few and then went into the bushes....

 

 

Then I was on the phone with Sacramento Linda and Dude was barking, then this howling barking started. I went outside and wayyyyyyyyy down in the lower pasture was a young coyote.... a black one! He was screaming/barking/howling..probably lost sight of his mom. Never saw a black coyote before.... nor a black elk! Weird!  do do do do do do do do......... (creepy music plays...)

Well, bummer about yesterday and dinner at Applegate Valley Ranch. The thunder started in the morning about 9am and accompanied by rain. Got a lot in a short time, but in Grants Pass the thunder was shaking everyone's homes! Scaring the animals and a lot of people! 4000+ homes lost power and by afternoon it was down to 1400+. We all decided to stay home last night and make sure our pets were not frightened and if the power went out we would be home. Of course, no more storm. But that's ok. We'll do Applegate Ranch one more time before summer is over.

 

At least I finally got my sink fixed.

At the beauty shop yesterday Leah was cutting the hair of a local woman who is 90 years old. On her 90th birthday she did skydiving! OMG. She's quite a gal. Chatted with her a bit. She walks all over town and still drives. We should all be so "spry" at that age!

 

Lunch yesterday... fried egg on top of rice cake, cheese on top of egg...

 

Dinner was veggies and lemon/mayonnaise/garlic dipping sauce...

 

All I know. Lunch with the "girls" today. Rain or shine! Rosso's and then The Twisted Cork for wine and tourist watching! Rosso's Italian.... good food!

Smoke filled the valley all day yesterday. It was choking. Also it was 96.2º. I didn't let PJ's cats out in that. Too icky. My pups and cat stayed in except to go out for potty duty.

Eat A Peach Day

(Ok, I can do that!)

 

 

... and going to make this:

 

 PEACH LIQUEUR
      Yield: 1 liter

     12 med Peaches
      4    Lemon peel strips, scraped
      1    Cinnamon stick
      3 c  Vodka
      1 c  Sugar syrup *see recipe below 
  You want yellow or cream-colored peaches. Season is May to Sept.
  Avoid green ones as they won't ripen at home. Peel peaches and cut in
  quarters. Combine with vodka, lemon peels, and spices in covered jar
  and store for 1-2 weeks, shaking occasionally. Strain fruit,
  squeezing as much juice as possible, and filter. Add sugar syrup and store for an additional 6 weeks. Yield: 1 liter
            Container: Wide mouth gallon jar

Syrup*

2 parts sugar

1 part water

Preparation:

1. Bring the water to a boil.
2. Dissolve the sugar into the boiling water, stirring constantly.
3. Once the sugar is dissolved completely, remove the pan from the heat. (Note: Do not allow the syrup to boil for too long or the syrup will be too thick.)
4. Allow to cool completely and thicken.

My dear friend Greg Lundell (Wilson High S'63 ...he and I used to do the Surfer's Stomp together at dances!) and his wonderful wife Becky have moved to Illinois. He is frustrated at the moving experience. Bekins (now owned by Wheaton Van Lines) has not delivered all of their things. Some missing even after a second delivery was made to their new home.  Other friends, Suzanne & Phil Santisteven (LASD ret) moved from California to Idaho and had the same complaints. The moving industry apparently is going in the toilet..... alas, the same way as our government!

On a very sad note, Greg's best friend's daughter, Shandra Fanning, was one of the UPS pilots killed last week. She was "a great gal" and also a friend of Greg's daughter Lauryn. So sorry to all of you for your loss. RIP Shandra.

 

UPS on Thursday night identified the victims as Capt. Cerea Beal, Jr., 58, of Matthews, N.C. and First Officer Shanda Fanning, 37, of Lynchburg, Tenn. In an email, the company said the Jefferson County, Ala., medical examiner had confirmed their identities.
A former Marine helicopter pilot, Beal had been with UPS since 1990. Fanning, described by UPS as an aviation enthusiast who was active and well-known in Lynchburg, had worked with the company since 2006.

National Senior Citizens Day honors our elderly population. On this day, we are encouraged to recognize and show appreciation for the value and contribution of elderly people to home, family and society.

In his Presidential Proclamation (August 19, 1988), President Ronald Reagan said "For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute. We can best demonstrate our gratitude and esteem by making sure that our communities are good places in which to mature and grow older." On National Senior Citizens Day, we should:

• Spend some time with senior citizens
• Show our appreciation for senior citizens
• Do volunteer work in support of the elderly
