Smoke and Fires Or & So. Cal ~ Egg Fried in Green Pepper

Good 54ยบ slightly smokey morning. Tree trimming guy, Chris, didn't make it yesterday. Truck broke down or something. He'll be here today. We may have thunder-boomers...

Yesterday we actually saw sky and clouds! And Dude got to go for a couple of runs~!

And.... we actually saw a water dropping helicopter fly over. With all the smoke they and the borate bombers haven't been flying...

The smoke on the Rogue River has been horrible... so much of it has been closed to the public... Here are a few folks doing a "float" on the river and were allowed to finish, then the area closed...

Wow, the fires in So. Cal are horrible!!! Many  many acres and lots of homes lost. Here is the info from my friend Joan down in Palm Desert....
My friends, Sandy (Todoran) and Jerome Beck live in Beaumont and she said at night they could see the flames!

H.L. Mencken (born 1880 - died 1956) was a journalist, satirist, critic -- and a Democrat.  He wrote this editorial while working for the Baltimore Evening Sun; it appeared in the July 26, 1920, edition:

"As democracy is perfected, the office of the President represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people.  On some great and glorious day, the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be occupied by a downright fool and complete narcissistic moron."

Breakfast yesterday was yummmmm... took a green pepper and sliced it, put butter and oil in a frying pan and heated it, added the sliced pepper, dropped an egg into each, salt/pepper, lid on and cooked til done. (They would have cooked faster with a larger pepper so the egg wasn't so thick)
Took one of Jeannie's heirloom tomatoes and sliced it up. GOOD!!!!

A little sweet/hot chili sauce and OMGOOD!!!

Binocular Flask/Lens Cup ~ Smoke Mask ~ LE/Fire Lunch ~ Zucchini

Good 50ยบ morning.  We did get some thunder and 10 or 6 drops of rain yesterday afternoon after 3pm. The rain just wet the ground, barely. Took this about 5pm yesterday.. my mountain is behind the smoke somewhere!
.... and this morning it's better, but it won't last ...

Here is the bounty that Jeannie and Bill gave me from their garden .. tomatoes, heirloom tomatoes, cukes and peppers. YUMMMM!

This is a riot. I ordered one from www.PrankPlace.com

It's a flask! Holds 16 oz!

And of course I have one of these...

A camera lens cup!
This came from www.nomorerack.com

Law Enforcement/Fire lunch was yesterday. We had some new LASD folks join us. Always fun. Tammy Allgood (LASD ret...Norwalk Stn) told me about a mask for the smoke at Amazon, so I ordered some.

Jeannie said her neighbors gave her and Bill each one of these.

The lunch was fun, we had a good group and the new folks all knew my Jerry!

Henry Buschke turned 97 years old yesterday. He hired on with LAPD in 1946. He's been retired over 40+ years! His son Mike, also ret. LAPD.... HAPPY BIRTHDAY HENRY!!

On my way into Grants Pass for the luncheon I stopped at Rogue River High School when I saw a gaggle of geese on the baseball field...

                                                 National Zucchini Day

Though technically a fruit, zucchini are prepared like vegetables. The emerald green squash, if left to its own devices, can grow up to 3 feet long. In fact, the longest zucchini ever grown was 6 feet 4 inches long!
Courgettes, as zucchini is known in some parts of the world, are a good source of dietary fiber nutrients. They can be prepared in a variety of ways. If you’re tired of the simple squash sautรฉ, try making zucchini boats. Split the zucchini in half lengthways, and scoop out some of the flesh. Fill the hollowed out shell with whatever you’d like: Sausage, goat cheese and peppers are a popular combination. You can even incorporate the scooped out zucchini into your mixture. Top the boats off with breadcrumbs and bake in the oven until golden brown.

Some other fun preparations for zucchini:
Bake zucchini bread, or cut it into thin ribbons and make zucchini pasta. You can also pickle zucchini slices then dredge and fry them.

Zucchini really is a versatile ingredient. The same holds true for the zucchini flower, or blossom. They can be stuffed and fried and add a crunchy element to any dish. And yes, they’re completely edible.
