Yesterday I was into the throws of putting up a new shade in my bathroom. The old one broke after 12 years. Not just a "shade" but a 57"x 58" top down/bottom up honeycomb shade. Chore! The new bracket didn't match up with the holes from the old one, so had to drill new holes and install the different bracket. Then figuring out the instructions... sheesh, they might as well have been in Greek! Also, climbing up and down on the tub platform was a pain! But, I got it done as was happy. Been procrastinating doing this for two months!

 

Of course, the Bruise was there every step of the way helping me (?).

Poultry Day

Poultry is a category of domesticated birds kept by humans for the purpose of collecting their eggs, or killing for their meat and/or feathers.

Chickens, Ducks, Geese, Pigeons, Pheasants, Turkeys, Quails, Doves, Emus, Mute Swans, Ostrich, and Guineafowl. Sigh......................

Coffee w/ Irish Cream ~ Corned Beef/Potatoes & Cabbage/Carrots & Mushrooms ~ Green Sugar Cookies ~ Guinness Surprise

 

Good 26º (Magg's water frozen!) dark morning. Supposed to be somewhat cloudy today and rain Tuesday and Wednesday. Will probably look the same as yesterday.... with the new green popping up...it looked like Ireland!

 

Yesterday being St. Paddy's.... I didn't have any Irish Whiskey, just Scotch and that wouldn't do on an Irish Day.. so made some coffee and put in Irish Cream. OMGOOD!!!

 

First thing I put the corned beef on to cook. I mixed 2 cans of Guinness with 2/3 cup of brown sugar. Added the meat and let it cook 5 hours.

 

After a couple of hours it started smelling soooooooooo good!

While that was cooking I made some green cookies...

Using sugar cookie dough I rolled it into little balls, rolled them in the green sugar, and put 3 or 4 together on the cookie sheet to resemble shamrocks... THEN I discovered that easier than "rolling" them in the sugar, I put the sugar in a container, added the cookie balls, put on the lid and shook them! Taaa daaaa..... EASIER! Then, tired of the shamrock look I just cooked them individually.

OMGOOD!!! I could have eaten them all! Oink.....

 

When I bought the Guinness I was wondering "what the heck is that boinking noise in the can?" .....

A widget is a device placed in a container of beer to manage the characteristics of the beer's head. The original widget was patented in Ireland by Guinness. The "floating widget" is found in cans of beer as a hollow plastic sphere, 3 cm in diameter (similar in appearance to a small table tennis ball) with a small hole in one side.

 

My granddaughter Sami wanted to "facetime" (like skype) with me on the iPad. She is so funny and enjoys getting close and making faces! She said, "Bobo, do you have any green on?"  ... Of course! My pajama bottoms:

Hey, I don't take any chances on getting pinched! Although in the scheme of things, highly unlikely in my situation!

 

Our gaggle of geese is growing.... from the original 3 to what looks like 10 or 11. 

Ok, so after the corned beef had cooked for 5 hours on high I added a couple cups of water, tasted the broth and it was really delicious! Added in some chopped leeks. After another 2 hours on low I added in baby carrots and some beautiful white mushrooms cut in half. Cooked another hour and a half or so on low. Cooked the potatoes, mashed them with butter, added in sauteéd cabbage. OMGOOOOOOOOD!!!!! Today is sandwich day!

 

Sigh...until next St. Paddy's Day, remember... A good memory is one that can remember the day's blessings and forget the day's troubles.

Good wet 36º morning. Told you it was going to rain.. had my truck washed the other day. Rain started when I was leaving here at 4:30 yesterday, heading for Grants Pass and the Elk's dinner.

 

A wee top o' the mornin' to ye. The half of me that's Irish wish you a day filled with Irish tales, Guinness beer, soda bread, corned beef and cabbage, and all things Irish.

My father's family, Irish, Laney ......

The name Laney in its original Gaelic form was O'Dubhshlaine and first appears in recorded history
around A.D. 950. The O' means "grandson of" or later, "descendant of." Dubh means "black." Shlaine is a territorial name referring to the district from which the river Slaney takes its name--a section of Slieve Bloom mountains in the County of Laois in southeast Ireland.

Dubhshlaine is best
translated, "the dark-haired ones of Slaney." (funny my name being Susan and Laney! Slaney!)

Daddy had black hair (so thick he could hardly get a comb through it)...

but he married a pretty Scottish Lass with light red hair... ergo mine was blonde.

Chief Dubhshlaine, whose ancestral home was at the foot of the Slieve Bloom Mountain (1,733 ft.),
is the patriarch of all the families whose names are Laney, DeLaney, and DuLaney, with numerous
variations in the spellings of each. According to some genealogists in Ireland, the Laney name was
once spelled "Leighneigh." It is in the district of the Slieve Bloom Mountain and the section east of it
in KilKenney County where the greatest number of DeLaneys are found today.

Last night was the Elk's Irish dinner. I was joined by my friends Dee & Dale, Tom and Kathy. Bill Jackson, lodge volunteer and friend joined our table with his friend Pat (yes, another one!). Dinner was buffet style...corned beef, cabage, potatoes, carrots. All really good! For those not wanting corned beef they had New York steaks, which apparently were great too! Here is Bill getting an award for his volunteering with the lodge with regards to military (he served in Viet Nam, wounded there, twice!)

Here you go, coffee for breakfast!

This classic recipe for Irish Coffee comes direct from Limerick, Ireland, where it was created by Chef Joe Sheridan in 1942 in an airport terminal that passengers passed through on their way to and from North America.

 

1 teaspoon brown sugar

6 ounces freshly brewed coffee

2 tablespoons Irish whiskey

Lightly whipped heavy cream

Place brown sugar in coffee mug or heat-proof glass. Fill with hot coffee, stir well to melt sugar, add whiskey, carefully pour cream over coffee so it floats. Do not stir after adding cream, as the true flavor is obtained by drinking the hot coffee and Irish whiskey through the cream.
