Cuckoo's Nest ~ Apple Crisp ~ Apple Strudel Day

Good 37º morning. Rain predicted for tomorrow and Sunday at 30% but the pressure is dropping now and the sky is clear as a bell!

It only hit 76º yesterday. Cool breezes all day. Kept a sweatshirt on in the house.

... my artichokes are getting to the point where I have to cut, cook, and can the hearts now. Will probably do that today.

Yeah, the 'hot dog' resigned.
"After serving two decades in politics, Congressman Anthony Weiner yesterday afternoon announced his resignation over an online scandal that has dominated headlines for the past month. The rowdy news conference took place at a council center for seniors in Brooklyn, where he had campaigned back in 1990 when he first ran for City Council. Weiner said the distraction he himself caused made it impossible to continue his term and that he wants to take time to work on his marriage. (LOL) A recent NY1/Marist poll found the majority of voters in Weiner's district -- 56 percent -- wanted him to stay. Only 33 percent said he should resign."
(What is that district filled with, sexual exhibitionists and deviates who think what Weeeener did was ok? It was 'normal'. HA! Right.)
This 'sexting' business certainly scoots around the laws. The only specificity is that it can't be a picture of anyone under 18 or it can't be sent to anyone under 18. But, sending nude pictures of adults to adults is not illegal. Shame!

I see my neighbor has gone back to watering... irrigating, again...

He told me once it was about $200 a month to run the electric water pump. Sheesh....  Of course, going against my grain, he is sucking all the water out of our aquifer. Confidentially, he's breaking the law! He is supposed to belong to the "irrigation district" and is regulated on the amount of water and where he gets it. Of course, Bill, the previous neighbor did the same thing. Only he put down so much water that it was running down his road! Idiot.

Cliff came home from his back surgery yesterday early evening. He is uncomfortable, but ok. Will take a bit to heal. Men have no patience for this type of thing. Patty has to be Nurse Ratched!
::::::::
Nurse Ratched (Character)
from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) Dialog altered to fit the current situation....
Nurse Ratched aka Patty: If Cliff doesn't want to take his medication orally, I'm sure we can arrange that he can have it some other way. But I don't think that he would like it.
[Cliff turns around to see Chuck smiling at him]
Chuck: Heh, YOU'D like it, wouldn't you?
[to Chuck, regarding the pills]
Cliff: Here, give it to me.
Mind your nursy, Cliff!!!!

Yesterday was filled with excitement. I dug out a pile of books, sent out an email, got several responses right away. Books will be in the mail Monday.
After dinner I wrapped up in my down comforter. It's the middle of June for Heaven's sake!

Today is National Apple Strudel Day, and I have included a more traditional recipe link at the bottom, but for those of you who don't want to make the dough, here's a great simple recipe I have been making for years, since I was a teen....It's easy and soooooo good warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!

Susan's Apple Crisp
4 apples - thinly sliced
3/4 c brown sugar
1/2 c flour
3/4 c quick cooking oats
1/2 c butter
Place apples in bottom of a buttered 8" square baking dish. Mix oats, sugar, flour and cut in butter. Spread crumbly mixture on top of apples. Bake 350º about 35 minutes until browning on top.
If you like .... add 3/4 t ground cinnamon and 3/4 t of ground nutmeg to flour mixture. You will thank me for this recipe!

Historically this date...

Oh, apple strudel. Haven't made in forever. Hope Gerry wants it for dessert this weekend):-

The best thing Congressman Weiner said the whole time is that this mess was a creation of his own doing. May he seek redemption. Not holding my breath for it, but I'm glad he will be doing some of the repair in private.

Thomas Haden Church may by eccentric- but on screen he is adorably so. Greg Kinnear is our generation's Jimmy Stewart.

Sue,
I will thank you for that recipe in advance of making it. Sounds easy and yummy! You know I like easy!
I really liked the TV show, Wings too.
Learned something new. Newt is 6 months older than a certain red head! :)
Your chokes look beautiful. I think you told us once that they aren't eatable like we normally eat them. Is that right?
Yes, that was certainly a roudy news conference yesterday. I was wondering how people got in who weren't reporters. Guess they let just anyone in. I thought it was a hoot, some of the things they were yelling! They sounded mighty angry and had every right to be.

It's turkey cooking day for me.
Have a good day!

Yes, T, the artichokes, except for the Globe variety, have leaves tough as all get out. Can't eat them, but the heart is good. I'm canning some today.
