Smoke ~ Oregon Fires ~ Deer ~ Kathy O'Brien ~ Lynda Castro ~ AD GSW 2006 ~ Omelette Maker ~ Jerry Lewis ~ Sunset

Good 52º smokey morning. The smoke may block some or all of the eclipse.

We'll see.... such a gloomy morning! Yuck!!!

Gadz was it smokey stinky yesterday. GAG. Many evacuations have been ordered for the Chetco Bar Fire  and more probably today. That fire Southwest of us close to Brookings is 70,000 acres!
We topped at 91º...

When I went out to take the picture of my mountain, does and fawn were out.....

Big day today with the eclipse. Be careful with your eyes and looking at it!

Yesterday was vacuum, dust, take trash to road, etc. day. Zowie!

Birthdays today.... Kindergarten through high school pal, Kathy (O'Brien) Forsythe is celebrating.
                                        HAPPY BIRTHDAY KATHY!

Today is also my pal Lynda Castro's birthday. Lynda- LASD ret. HAPPY BIRTHDAY LYNDA!
With her love, Rick (LASD ret.)

And today is the 11th anniversary of the day I had an AD (accidental discharge) and GSW (gunshot wound)

I was practicing with a little Beretta .22 semi-auto.

It would not un-cock, so I held it by the grips and set it down. As I leaned down it discharged. I was leaning way down and the bullet went from the gun in my right hand to my left hand. OUCH!!!!! OMG. That HURT!!!

Jerry called 911 and the ambulance picked me up, took me to the hospital where they managed to get my wedding ring off without cutting it (as I had pleaded!) then I was taken by ambulance to the air port where Mercy Flights flew me to Portland to the hospital Oregon University Hospital where they had a hand surgeon. None were available here at that time.

The bullet went through the left side of my hand at the pinky (which broke it) and exited through the center of my hand. The doctor put a pin in the broken bone in my pinkie and stitched up the rest of my hand.

Back home I discovered where the bullet ended up... in this metal can next to where I had tried to set the gun down....

After I had written about this GSW the first time, I had a number of notes from LASD people who had one of these guns at one time and said they were POS and dangerous and they got rid of theirs after having accidental discharges also. Surprised Jerry and I, as Berettas were such good guns always! Our duty weapon was a Beretta 9mm.  Jerry took this one apart and buried it.

Breakfast was another omelette. I had mixed with the two eggs some Parmesan cheese, some mayonnaise (a couple large tablespoons full, as it makes the eggs creamier! Makes scrambled eggs much better too than adding milk!), and some chopped up avocado..... Oh yes, and had fresh mozzarella snack cheese, avocado quarter, leftover balsamic mushrooms/peas, and a Stroopwaffle....

Side view of omelette.... creamy and fluffy good!!! So far, perfect every time!

Here is the omelette maker I bought... Holstein Omelette Maker

47 second video of how it works:
There is not much clean up either... just wipe it out with a cloth or paper towel. Easy peasy. Each omelette is made with 2 eggs and whatever ingredients you like.
They also sell them at Amazon:

Sad to read Jerry Lewis died. But wow, 91 years old. He was great and so fun to watch!

The sunset last night was hot!

Smoke ~ Omelette ~ Prepare For Eclipse ~ Squish the Flamingo ~ Jerry Dream ~ Steak with Balsamic Mushrooms ~ Dodgers vs Tigers ~ Smokey Sunset

Good 49º extremely smokey morning.

Yesterday it was sickeningly smokey as well. I had to close the house up early and turn on the AC and ceiling fans. Cough cough cough....
Temperature wise we topped at 85.8º.

Yesterday I could hardly see my mountain for the smoke.... and it looks the same right now...

Breakfast was an omelette filled with shredded chicken and Parmesan cheese and yogurt and tomato on the side.  I made the omelette with a new omelette maker. Super easy. Super good. Super fluffy. More on that later...

At the top of the plate is the chocolate side of one of those biscotti's ..... just in case you were wondering what that odd looking stuff was!

Get prepared for tomorrow.... our total eclipse will happen about 10:15 in the morning here and we are just about 200 miles south of the line.

Friend Ann Ramirez (LASD ret) sent me this link re the time of the eclipse in Rogue River...

The first spot on Oregon where it will happen is Depot Bay (Hey Joe and JoAnn.... )
Here is a listing of times it will be visible in different areas:
It will also be recorded locally here on Channel 10 & 12 from 10:am til noon. Check your listings to see if it's being shown in your area.

Historically this date............

He once said he had traveled around the country to all the fairs and the best one he went to was the LA Co Fair in Pomona!  Jerry and I thought so too! Never missed one.

This was on the Friday night news....

Meet Squish, a baby greater flamingo, who was born just a few months ago from an egg that was found abandoned.
Workers at Singapore's Jurong Bird Park incubated the egg until Squish was born.
Today, Squish was able to strut around the park with specially made blue booties protecting his feet from the hot ground.
The booties, according to bird experts, will help prevent his feet from getting calluses, which could get infected and delay his release into the wild.
Squish is taking strolls daily to help strengthen his legs and give him some exposure to sunlight.
Gerard Wan, Jurong Bird Park's animal care officer, said the UV rays from the sun will help boost his calcium levels which will strengthen his bone development.
"When his feet are [strong enough,] we will send him back into the flock, and hopefully, he will be able to integrate with them," Wan said.
Wan said Squish has been progressing well and doesn't need to be fed by hand anymore. Currently, Squish weighs 3.5 pounds, and park workers anticipate he will be strong enough to release to the flock in about two weeks.
What is funny about this story is the name Squish. That is the nickname Brian gave to his Sami!

I was having a dream early Saturday morning. I was in a super crowded parking lot trying to find a parking place. The lot looked a lot like the one by Brian's office. Anyway, I looked up and there was Jerry, wearing a light blue pull over shirt and wearing a red cowboy hat. He pointed me to the only available parking spot! OMG.

He loved wearing cowboy hats!

You know, more often than not I do find parking spots right up front and close to where I am going. I always figured Jerry was watching out for me and made them available! Friends are always saying, "how come you always find a front row parking place?" LOL

Later dinner was a filet Omaha Steak, avocado, tomato, and some balsamic/buttery mushrooms. First I sauteéd the mushrooms in butter very slowly.

Then I added in some Napa Valley Pomegranate Balsamic Vinegar... let that cook for a bit and then added in some mayonnaise and it made a super good gravy!

I know, there are lots of things you don't think about adding mayonnaise to, but it works for all kinds.... great slathered on a chicken for roasting too.

Then chair, wine, and TV...

I watched the Dodgers vs Detroit Tigers baseball game. The game was played in Detroit. Really pretty stadium down in the middle of town....

The Dodgers won 3 to zip! The announcers for the game were Dick Enberg and Kirk Gibson!!!

Our smokey sunset....
