Rain ~ Leadership Skills ~ Taj Mahal ~ Dehydrated Veggies ~ Elk's Corned Beef/Cabbage Dinner ~ Cindy Mize ~ Coq au Vin in Slow Cooker

Good 47º drizzling morning. Heard the rain coming down hard about 3am! Looks like we got 1/2". Yes!!! Need more. May get it if we believe what "they" are saying:

Friend Joan posted this on FB. Funny!

And then my friend Miss Bonnie posted this of her and her daughter Laurie in front of the Taj Mahal from their recent trip... Here's a link with 411:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taj_Mahal

Yesterday I was cleaning, doing laundry, and organizing. You know, the usual. Boring. I decided to make some of the easiest vegetable soup in the world. I have this supply of Harmony House dehydrated vegetables...  So into the casserole Crock*Pot I put 8 half cups of veggies... green beans, bell peppers, spinach, corn, carrots, leeks, broccoli, and celery..

and 1/4 cup of dehydrated onion and 1/4 cup of dehydrated garlic.

Then in went 1/4 cup O Olive Oil "California Mission Olives, organic Tahitian limes .. crushed together"..

and the O Olive Oil can be purchased through Amazon also:
Or direct from:
http://www.ooliveoil.com/   They also have AWESOME vinegars. Any flavor you can think of!

Then I added in the water and chicken stock, 4 cups of each. Turned on high and let it go for a couple hours.
Today I will add maybe some canned chicken or whatever strikes my fancy and finish it off. Dinner!

Then about 4:30 I left for Grants Pass. The Elks were putting on their annual Corned Beef & Cabbage Dinner. Met up with Dee and Dale Yellin, Kathy and Tom Corso, Jennifer Murphy and Mike Hannan were supposed to join us but unfortunately Mike got sick so Jennifer also stayed home. Joining our table were Bill Jackson and his pal Pat and her friend Julie. Bill is an Elk and collects items for the vets over at White City Domiciliary and Rehab Center...
http://www.southernoregon.va.gov/. He and Pat raise and show dogs. Julie is a nurse. Formerly of El Cajon, then Alaska, then Reno, and now moving to Grants Pass.

I got to the lodge early, got a carafe of wine for the girls to share...

The gang:
L-R Kathy, Dee, Dale, Tom, Bill, Pat, and Julie....
We were all so sad that the turnout was so small. They had 6 tables set up to seat 8 people, but they weren't all filled! Normally that whole room is full. Declining membership and discontent with a female ER has a lot to do with it. No new young members.
Dinner was GREAT as usual. Chef Eric does an awesome job!

We all had a good time visiting and eating and drinking!
Home a little after 8. Bruiser happy to come in, Dude happy to finally get his dinner!!!

Today is my great neighbor's birthday... Cindy Mize. HAPPY BIRTHDAY CINDY!!

.... and look at this, the little boy in Rin Tin Tin was Lee Aaker who played Rusty... OMG! He's only 71. He was married one time, from 1969-1971. No children. No more marriages. Sad, he was soooooo cute as a child.

1933 – May Britt, Swedish actress
She met Sammy Davis, Jr. in 1959. They began dating, and, after a brief engagement, were married on November 13, 1960. Their wedding caused controversy. A rumor or myth, John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy told Frank Sinatra to tell Davis not to marry May until after the 1960 Presidential Election. At that time interracial marriage was forbidden by law in 31 U.S. states, and only in 1967 were those laws (by then down to 17 states) ruled unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court.

National Goof Off Day

Now here's a day that just about everybody can relax and enjoy. It's a day to do anything and everything.....except what you're supposed to do today.
Assuming you won't get in trouble at work or school, go ahead and play some golf, or play games all day. Spend extra time surfing the net. Go out and spend the day window shopping with your favorite friend. Or, just read sit down and read a book or watch Tv. This day is set aside for you to do anything you enjoy doing.
A few years ago, a survey was performed to identify the most popular activity for goofing off. The top activity was playing video games. Who conducted the survey? Ninetendo.......no surprise. It kinda makes you wonder just who might have had the brainstorm to create this day......hmmmm. Nowadays, the most popular Goof Off Day activity is likely playing games on the internet, or on our Smart Phones.

Today is also "Coq Au Vin" Day

Coq au Vin is a classic French recipe, a bistro favorite, and one of the first things many people learn to cook as they approach the French repertoire. This recipe is the favorite umami-rich dish of umami expert David Kasabian. The recipe comes from the book, The Fifth Taste, Cooking with Umami, which David co-authored with his wife, Anna.
Coq au vin is French for “rooster in wine [sauce],” a fricassee* traditionally cooked with lardons (salt pork), mushrooms and garlic. Older roosters were preferred because they contain more connective tissue, which creates a richer broth. In postwar America, chicken is most often substituted for rooster and smoked ham for the lardons.
Here's an easy Crock*Pot version:

Years ago my mother and I had a "cook off". I made coq-au-vin and she made another chicken dish. We all decided mine was the best. I can't imagine doing that now.

Your corned beef dinner looked so yummy but I did miss the potatoes on your plate. Last week Daryl cooked that dinner and cooked the potatoes and carrots in a ton of chicken broth. (There wasn't enough room in the crock for them) OMG the best and most flavorful I have ever had.

Yes it's sad when attendance is down. That's the case with our club gatherings and I hear most of the RWF clubs are having that problem. I don't understand it.

Some people think even when I'm working, I'm goofing off):- Rin Tin Tin and and Sky King. Weren't those Saturday morning shows? I remember watching on my parents' first television.
