Historically this date...

In the Northern Hemisphere, meteorological Autumn starts on 20 September. In the Southern Hemisphere, meteorological Spring starts on this date.

1881Chester A. Arthur is inaugurated as the 21st President of the United States following the assassination of James Garfield.

Riggs was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1988. He founded the Bobby Riggs Tennis Museum Foundation to increase awareness of the disease. Riggs died of cancer October 25, 1995, in Encinitas, California, aged 77.

In his final days, Riggs maintained friendly contact with Billie Jean King, and King phoned him often. She called him shortly before his death, offering to visit him, but he did not want her to see him in his condition. She phoned him one last time, the night before his death and, according to Billie Jean herself in an HBO documentary about her, the last thing she told Riggs was "I love you." (Interview with Billie Jean King, USA US Open telecast, August 28, 2006)

2011 – The United States ends its "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, allowing gay men and women to serve openly for the first time.

Yesterday I soaked and cooked dried garbanzo beans so I can make hummus.

Also baked some garlic heads for that purpose. I infused some olive oil with garlic, onion, and red pepper flakes.  I had left a perfectly good ice chest down by my mailbox.... inquired with a few folks to see if anyone wanted it, but no. So left it there and of course it's gone now!

I moved some things around in the living room, purposely the cat post/bed... and put it by the front door. The Bruise seems happy about that, as he can see outside and/or nap. Also, he can't jump from there to the top of the entertainment center!

And breakfast was a egg sprinkled with bacon salt, fried, and put on low calorie wheat bread with cheese, tomato, and olive oil & black cracked pepper mayo.... YUMMMM!

All I know. TGIF. Nuff said. Ciao.

POW/MIA Recognition Day

Third Friday of September POW/MIA Recognition Day is a day of remembrance and hope for the speedy and safe return of American Prisoners of War, and those still Missing in Action. It also seeks the return of the remains of fallen soldiers. The first official commemoration of POW/MIAs was July 18, 1979. It was the result of resolutions passed in Congress. The first national ceremony was held on this date. Over the next several years, it was held in varying dates of the year. Finally, in 1986, The National League of Families proposed the third Friday in September as a day to recognize and remember POW/MIAs. This date was selected, as it is not associated with any wars. Each year, the president of the United States issues a proclamation on this day. Did you know? Federal law requires the POW/MIA flag to be flown on the following days:
  • Armed Forces Day, May 16
  • Memorial Day, May 25
  • Flag Day, June 14
  • Independence Day, July 4
  • POW/MIA Day, 3rd Friday of September
  • Veterans Day, Nov. 11
You will also notice the POW/MIA flag flown at all US Post office buildings, Veterans Administration, military memorial facilities, and many U.S. government buildings. Please take a few moments today, to remember our missing soldiers, and those held as prisoners of war. Attend a ceremony in your area. Say a prayer for POWs and MIAs. Also, write to your senators and congressman to urge continued and increased effort towards bringing every service man and woman home.

HAPPIEST BIRTHDAY TUCKER!! I have always said what a beautiful little boy he is. For years I kept the photo of Jerry holding him. He was so beautiful. No boy should have those eye lashes tho! Jealous!
So does Jen have one of her terrific parties planned for this weekend?

Speaking of Jerry, Steve and Jerry could be brothers they look so much alike!

Every year when you post about the Nelson boys I nearly get teary thinking about Ricky being gone.
