Summer Solstice ~ El Sereno ~ Grilled Peaches

Good sunny clear 52º morning. Yesterday we topped at 90º just before sunset. Talking to Linda in Woodland, it was 96º there. Summer has arrived..................

AND ... taaaa daaaaa today is the Summer Solstice... the first day of summer, and the longest day of the year. Sweat this one out kids!

Sunday there were all these critters around and I didn't get them into my blog...

Mr. Buck was eating the wild birdseed out of the bird feeder!

Lick lick lick lick.......
And Ms. Doe was eating grass in the shade under the trampoline...

The difference in the artichokes (and really folks, if you live in So. Cal you SHOULD grow your own! So easy!) between the Globe which are wonderful and tender when cooked and these other spiny tough old chokes is the shape of the leaves....

This is my Globe......

To see more clearly what Dave and PJ did re the drip system here's a close up...

And my grapes are coming along....

This year, for sure, I am going to preserve some grape leaves so I can make one of my favorite Greek dishes, Dolmas!

Ok, now for a good laugh (nothing personal men!) here are three videos of men in the kitchen. I am still laughing!!!!!
This guy, no ... not Harley, has the right idea! He sure looks like my Harley though.

Historically this date....
1982John Hinckley is found not guilty by reason of insanity for the attempted assassination of U.S. President Ronald Reagan.
What a joke! He's out and has a driver's license even!

And births this date include...
1921Judy Holliday, American actress (d. 1965)
1921 – Jane Russell, American actress (d. 2011)

1933Bernie Kopell, American actor

1940Mariette Hartley, American actress

1947Meredith Baxter, American actress

1947 – Michael Gross, American actor

.... and my friend Barbara Voors is celebrating today. HAPPY BIRTHDAY BARB!!!!! ♪♫•*¨*•.¸¸♥HAPPY♥BIRTHDAY TO YOUUUUU♥¸¸.•*¨♥†♥†♥ ♥†♥†♫♪ ♪♫•♥♥†♥†♥ ♥†♥†♥ ♥♪♫•*•♫♪ ♪♫•*¨*•.¸¸♥♥†♥†♥ ♥HAPPY♥♪♫•♥BIRTHDAY TO YOUUUUUU†♥†♥ ♥†♥†♥

Last night I watched Law & Order LA "El Sereno". Interesting, a mass murder in a mortgage brokers office. But, the reason I watched was because it was filmed in El Sereno (for those of you who don't know, it's a suburb east of Los Angeles, bordering on Alhambra to the east and So Pasadena to the north. This is where I grew up.) ..... One store looked familiar.... very little filmed on the streets that I knew, or else have changed so much now. Here are three current views... The first one is Eastern Ave at Huntington Dr. SW corner where Curries Mile High Ice Cream used to be, with Manny's right up the street. Nice. Trash everywhere.

Next is Huntington Dr looking east from Eastern...

And last is the unrecognizable library!

Ya just can't go back! My old house is now a two story ... lots of changes but they still haven't fixed the driveway, painted the porch steps, the old gate is still there and so is the same front door. Sad to me....

Daddy's Macadamia Nut tree is still there and thriving (not supposed to grow there because of frost) LOL, seems to me the front porch was a lot bigger when I was there! Spent many hours sitting on those steps~! Also, mowing that lawn!

All I know. Nuff said. Happy Tuesday! Ciao.
P.S. So you know, comments and observations are ALWAYS WELCOME and appreciated whether on the blog itself under "Comments" or via emails.

June 21st
National Peaches and Cream Day
Now I had grilled peaches at Leann and Tyson's house last summer and they are AWESOME!
Peaches are a natural for the grill, where quick cooking brings out juiciness and intensifies sweetness.
  1. Start with peaches that are firm with just a little give when you give them a gentle squeeze with your whole hand.
  2. Cut the peaches in half and pit them. You can grill entire peach halves or cut them into wedges. Peeling the peaches isn't necessary for the grill, but you certainly can peel them, if you like.
  3. Brush cut side(s) of the peaches with a neutral-tasting oil, like grapeseed or canola or a light corn oil.
  4. Cook peaches over a medium fire on both sides until grill marks show and peaches are tender but not falling apart.

How cool that you shared your visual look back in time! I've done the same thing for my original home in the ELA-Montebello unicorporated area (6144 Fairfield Street). When I worked NWK Station I would cruise my old neighborhood and fondly remember my first days (birth through 6th grade) while being shocked at amazed at how things had changed. We had a Curries Mile High Cones store about a block away from the Montebello Municipal Park on Whittier Blvd. I've Googled the site numerous times since then, too. Small world. :- )

Love the pics of the deer.. Especially the one eating the bird seed. It has the sweetest face... I can't imagine waking up each morning to the view of wild animals roaming around my yard... You are blessed.

"El Sereno". You mention L.A. reminds me of my HS years at Belmont HS not far from downtown. Lived right across from Bimini Baths, off of Vermont Ave.long gone. Your "farm" drip system reminds me of my "west forty," that's forty feet. Have two Topsy Turvy tomato plants that are growing well.

Sue,
Yes you are blessed. It's like living in Wild Kingdom! lol
Wasn't it interesting that Michael Gross and Meredith Baxter were born on the same day and starred in the TV comedy Family Ties as husband and wife? My friends' daughter played their little girl, Tina Yothers.
How fun seeing where you grew up. I think the house looks very nice. It has obviously been well cared for.
A Huge Happy Birthday to my long time friend Carol Herrera today!

Yes, Belmont High...I was born in the Hollywood Pres Hosp on Vermont, worked at the Yellow Pages at Beverly/Vermont, and my great aunt lived on New Hampshire just north of Beverly. Wow, memories!

Yes, T, M Gross and Meridith on the same show with same bdays. Odd. Have you seen Tina since she grew up? My old house is not well cared for, they just had a second story added and the plaster and paint are relatively new, but the rest is a mess.xo

S,
I saw Tina when she had gone into being a rock singer. I saw her in tabloid mags but not complimentary!
Well the house looks nice in the picture to me.

I just now remembered to go back and watch the men in the kitchen videos. I AM STILL CRACKING UP!!! I have to copy those and show to John! What a hoot that guy running down the street after his car was repoed and his apt. burning! Yikes! So funny!!! I wondered if they ever showed that one anywhere. Doubt it was on TV. Think I'll post them on FB too. Give lots of folks a good laugh!

LOL, you asked me if I had seen Tina Yothers since she grew up. Remember? Read posts above.

Hey! I logged onto your blog thinking maybe it didn't come to me today. You haven't posted one for today. Hope all is ok.
