Good 33º foggy morning.

 

 

Yesterday it stayed foggy and cold and finally the sun peeked through the clouds/fog about noon and we heated to 43º! Then the sun snuck in and out...

 

It came out more later and we warmed to 56º

 

 

Dude and I made a quick trip into town to pick up a package at the post office. It was a Pasadena City College Honor Band shirt. Grandson Jack will be drumming with the band in the Rose Parade. I will be wearing the shirt!!!

A little later I was playing solitaire on my computer and Bruiser decided that was the place he wanted to nap!

December 27th....
1968 – Apollo Program: Apollo 8 splashes down in the Pacific Ocean, ending the first orbital manned mission to the Moon.

 

On the 26th there was a program on public television about the Apollo 8 and Apollo 11. It was fascinating. All those astronauts then and now. All they went through and all the technology that was developed.

Turkey Pot Pie uses up your holiday leftovers to make the ultimate comfort food! Tender turkey, mixed veggies, delicious gravy, and flaky pie crust means this has to be good. One forkful and you'll know this is true!

 

• 2 cups leftover cut-up turkey
• 2 cups leftover mixed veggies
• 2 1/2 cups turkey gravy
• 1/2 teaspoon poultry seasoning
• 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
• 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
• 1 (14.1-ounce) package refrigerated folded pie crusts (2 crusts)

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
2. In a large bowl, combine all ingredients except the pie crusts; mix well.
3. Unroll one pie crust and place in a 9-inch deep-dish pie plate, pressing crust firmly into pie plate. Spoon turkey mixture into crust. Unroll second pie crust and place over turkey mixture. Pinch the edges together to seal and trim edges. (You can flute the edges if you’d like.)  Using a paring knife, cut four 1-inch slits in the top to allow the steam to escape while this bakes.
4. Place the pie plate on a rimmed baking sheet and bake 40 to 45 minutes or until heated through and crust is golden. Allow to sit 10 minutes before serving.

 

**This is great to make the day after a holiday when you have tons of leftovers. However, if you get the hankerin’ for this and there are no leftovers, you can pick up some thick-cut deli turkey and chunk that up, use a bag of frozen mixed veggies, and a jar of gravy will do the trick.

Later dinner was an Omaha Steaks marinated salmon filet and some of their sweet potato soufflé with a bit of baby spinach and some carrots. YUMMMMMMM!!!! Those salmon filets are awesome. Cooked in my air fryer.

There may have been a few pieces of chocolate candy tucked into your stocking.  Or perhaps you received a box of your favorite chocolates as a gift.  December 28 is the day to enjoy those delicious treats.  It’s National Chocolate Candy Day.

The word “chocolate” comes from the word “xocoatl” or “chocolatl”. Mayan “school” means hot or bitter, and the Aztec “atl” means water. Chocolate is made from the cacao plant.  Before it was ever made into a sweet candy, it was ground into a beverage.  In ruling class society, the beverage was used for medical purposes.

Chocolate Facts

• In 1828 technology was invented that allowed chocolate to be produced into a solid form.
• In 1828, thanks to the invention of Dutch chemist Coenraad Van Houten, we can enjoy chocolate in the form we have today. His hydraulic press made it possible to remove the cocoa butter from the cacao-producing a powder opening the way for the first chocolate confections.
• In 1847 cocoa butter, cocoa powder and sugar were combined by British chocolate company J.S. Fry & Sons to produce the first edible chocolate bar.
• Whitman’s produced their first box of chocolate.
• The invention of the conching machine by Rodolphe Lindt in 1879 ushered in mass production of the creamy treat.
• The first chocolate Easter egg was made sometime in the early 19th century. In 1875 John Cadbury introduced his first chocolate egg.
• Hershey Chocolate company designed a specific chocolate bar for the U.S. Army.  The D ration bar was included in the emergency rations and in the packs of soldiers when the Allied troops stormed the beach of Normandy on D-Day.
