Maggie ~ Girls At Blondie's ~ Peanuts

Good 34º must be cloudy 'cause I can't see any stars morning. Stayed sunny and pretty all day yesterday except for a couple drops of rain in the morning. Scattered clouds. This was the drive home from Grants Pass......

Today would have been Maggie's 15th birthday, born in 1999. One month exactly before my grandson Jackson!  She's been gone since August and not a day goes by without missing her terribly! She was a love!

She wasn't Irish but pretended just for one day a year. She was Scottish, a McNab, named for the man who bred these dogs.. Generally McNabs are black and white and "occasionally red and white"... being a "red head" and Scottish I named her Maggie after my red headed Scottish mother, Margaret.

Alexander McNab was originally a sheep herder in the Grampian Mountains in Scotland, and emigrated to Mendocino County, CA in 1866. He settled on a 10,000 acre ranch, which he named the McNab Ranch. McNab, dissatisfied with the working ranch dogs available locally, traveled back to Scotland in 1885, to find the type of dogs he had worked with while raising sheep. He eventually bought two Scotch Collies, Peter and Fred. He returned to California with Peter, while he left Fred in Scotland to finish his training. He imported him back to his ranch later.
Being males, McNab had Peter and Fred bred with two females supposedly of Spanish origin, brought by Basque sheep herders from the Basque region of Northern Spain. Other sources claim that they were, in fact, bred with other Scotch Collies. McNab later imported several more collies from Scotland, some of which were red and white Fox Collies. Some McNab dogs share this coloration, as previously mentioned. The McNabs were bred as the perfect cattle dog, that could both head and heel. They are still used in California ranches and stockyards today.
McNabs are not recognized by the National Kennel Association, although they are slowly becoming more and more common and popular.

Yesterday was great. Met up with Jennifer, Dee, and Nancy (whose birthday is Sunday) for lunch at Blondie's Bistro.

March 15th
National Peanut Lovers Day
(Jerry kept his smoker in the barn and was always smoking salted in the shell peanuts ... soooo good! and he'd share with Maggie. She loved peanuts and peanut butter!)

They're the best part of Crackerjack and the main ingredient in mixed nuts. It's no surprise, roasted and salted peanuts make for great snacking. But peanuts are highly nutritious and make good, healthy foods like peanut butter and are an ingredient in many Middle Eastern and Asian dishes. Peanut oil is a versatile cooking oil. What's not to love? We're talking peanuts here!
