Kitty & Fawn ~ Radish Pickles ~ Ice Cream Cone Day

Good 46º sunny clear morning. I see the day coming when that won't be my greeting! We will get weather!

Hot yesterday, 95º. I know, I know, whine whine whine!

Today is the 265th day of the year and we only have 100 left of 2011!

You have to see this.... a fawn and a kitty. Too cute!

PJ and Dave came up and I helped her type out a letter... Dave anchored the new flag pole into the ground with cement.....

Then I went to the store. I needed bell peppers so I can make jalapeño jelly with the jalapeños from Jeannie and Bill's. Will also be making a tamale casserole for a family of 4 teenagers. The mom is in Portland taking her 22 year old son for cancer treatments. The kids are on their own for a week, so we are pitching in making dinners for them while mom is away. Single moms .... hard job. So happy to help out.

Yesterday I made pickled radishes. Easy as pie. Cut and trim 2 bunches of radishes, cut into quarters (the small ones in half). Put in Mason jar, add 2 T black peppercorns, 2 T mustard seed, 1 T kosher salt, 4 t sugar, 9-12 garlic cloves. Then fill almost to top with white vinegar and top off with water. Shake up until sugar dissolves, and refrigerate two days before eating.

So..... this morning I tasted some. OMG GOOD! Crunchy and tasty! Thank you to Taste Spotting~ and Claire.

Historically this date...
1888 – The first issue of National Geographic Magazine is published

... a magazine I have loved for years!

1941World War II: On Jewish New Year Day, the German SS murder 6,000 Jews in Vinnytsya, Ukraine. Those are the survivors of the previous killings that took place a few days earlier in which about 24,000 Jews were executed.

.......... unbelievable. Such horrid stats. Hitler should have died a painful and horrible death!

1975Sara Jane Moore tries to assassinate U.S. President Gerald Ford, but is foiled by Oliver Sipple.

1991 – The Dead Sea Scrolls are made available to the public for the first time by the Huntington Library.

1993 – A barge strikes a railroad bridge near Mobile, Alabama, causing the deadliest train wreck in Amtrak history. 47 passengers are killed.

And births this date include...

.... and a guy I have known since kindergarten...John Berokoff is celebrating his birthday today. We lost touch after graduation and just in the last 2 years got in touch again. John is a teacher .. still at it... was a star footballer at our high school. Here is a picture of the boys in our class in 1953... we were 8 years old!

There's John second from left top row. HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOHN!

I watched the Tivo'd new season of Two and a Half Men last night. Ashton Kutcher replaced the irascible unstable drugged up Charlie Sheen. It was garbage, pure and simple. Charlie's "funeral" was sick, all the former gf's telling what STD's they got from Charlie, his stalker neighbor Rose, who apparently threw him in front of a train and no murder charges were brought, and then there is Kutcher who runs around naked and the women are admiring his "oversized' Johnson! Come on people. Who writes this junk! What amazes me is that Kutcher is getting $750,000 PER EPISODE! Sick world. Sick writers. Sick producers. And those of you who like this kind of trash, I'm sorry. :o(

My uncle Lloyd owned a Dairy Queen in Sacramento (and when we were stationed at Mather AFB we were treated to anything we wanted!! ) but there was one around the corner from us when Kristen was little...our favorite hang-out!

.. and of course Baskin-Robbins!

Sue, Oh, the memories I have of the Curries Mile High shop on Whittier Blvd. across the street from Montebello Jr. High. I was a magical place, just like the Wil Wright's on PCH in Newport Beach not far from the the Balboa Bay Club. Mom and Dad's summer place was in that area. Of course back then our "ice cream $$" came out of Mom's food budget soooo it was a treat to buy something there. They also had the "penny" candy and sometimes we had that and just drooled over those tubs of ice cream. Thanks for the memories. XO Edda

Glad you enjoyed a little trip "back", E. Yes, Curries and next to that was Mannys. Good Mexican food and right close was dessert! Ours was on Eastern Avenue and Huntington Drive, El Sereno.

Hi Sue,

I grew up in Lynwood, Calif. and a bunch of us kids use to go there for ice cream.
Ollie grew up in San Pedro and they went to the Curries there.

Sue,

We felt the same about our fav show 2-1/2 Men. I hated it! They were so crude and rude and not as funny as the old show. I am wondering if some or all of the writers quit and new ones were hired. I do love the old characters as we feel like we know them so well. We will continuing watching in hopes that it gets better. If not we will be surprised if it's a success.
mmmmm ice cream cones look yummy! Also I love the sound and looks of your pickled radishes! A new one on me!

I agree...sick, sick show and not a bit funny. I
actually liked Charlie Sheen in the role originally. I
know he's a drugged up mess, but did play a funny
role. Too bad they had to have that sick funeral, because
now Sheen cannot come back, and don't think Ashton
will last long. What a mess. Cyn

I'm happy to see it's not just me who didn't like that garbage. xo Thanks Cyn

Ok T, your assignment ... should you choose to accept it will be to watch
2 1/2 Men and report back. I'm not watching that in hopes it gets better! It just stinks. Maybe I'll write the show and tell them. :o)

Sue,

Will do! John and I never miss it. In fact HE is the one who reminded me of the night the new season started. I don't think he was thrilled either. Hated the funeral bit even tho his mother Evelyn is always a hoot. Cyn, remember when Bobby died on Dallas and the next season they brought him back? They made the prior season just a dream. Anything can happen in Hollyweird! The reason I think Charlie was so great in that role was because he played himself! His lifestyle was Charlie off the screen as well as on. Love all the characters.
